I gave up on Toyotas in 2010 due to so many expensive repairs.
As for Subaru, my brother swears by his 2024 Forrester.
Once the Porsche Boxster Motor went in the Subaru’s
Well,
I just will not buy a car or truck from a company that can’t afford to or lost the ability to build their own engine.

Like Jeep, Dodge Engines, Fiat Ekectronics.

I’ve never had trouble with any of my Fords,
The money I was saving by not driving Taco’s
Was substantial.
This is my first Ford but nothing has wowed me vs. my old Subaru. I would avoid a Subaru truck with a CVT but if they took the Rav4 Hybrid powertrain and put it in a truck unibody that would be a strong competitor to the Maverick. Most likely closer to the Santa Cruz but that would be fine.

I went with the Maverick over the Santa Cruz because it didn't seem very good at doing truck things and reliabilty is a concern for all gas powered Hyundai's. I did prefer the ammenties and styling of the santa cruz though.

Heck they could take a 20 year old tacoma and mesh it into a Rav4 body and it would sell like crazy.

Do a google search on “Toyota Stout” due to hit USA showrooms end of the year. If it’s a full hybrid like Maverick and thousands cheaper I might have to consider one😂

Even if they announce today that they are doing it, it'll be years before we see anything on the road.

With that being said, I hope for a surprise announcement that it's secretly been in testing and they are releasing 2026 Stout with orders available in late 2025, based on the Rav4 which comes in both Hybrid/PHEV and will directly compare with the size/layout of the Maverick Hybrid.
Hello fellow torontonian, I want to breathe the same air as you, but I'm not so optimistic.
Prior to the maverick I had a toyota corolla, and it served me very well, and if toyota had something more like a maverick, I probably would have got it. The Taco is a bit too much for personal vehicle, I see it as a work truck. I don't know why toyota doesn't have something to compete with maverick, colorado or santa cruz. Anyway, I'm very happy with my maverick so far.

The Stout exists as a perpetual rumor that keeps zero-source click baiters in business.

The closest to a "Stout" is the electric pickup concept Toyota showed off a while ago, which is what THIS thread was speculating off of.

You have to remember this is Toyota we are talking about. They have been rumbling about compact trucks and solid state batteries for a decade now and it hasn't happened. By the time they actually do bring something maybe 2027-2028 there will be a LOT more chargers than there are today. But a PHEV and hybrid version is right up their alley for sure. I just wouldn't hold my breath waiting on Toyota.
I won't hold my breath waiting for a real announcement and I wouldn't hold my breath waiting for delivery if they do bring one... It'll be 12-18 month delivery times, a co-worker is still waiting for his Rav4 hybrid, 16 months and counting.

You’re kidding right ?
I bought the very first Bronco Sport in the county because the Mavericks were not out in Dec 2020. Turned out to be such a good vehicle I kept it four years. Seems that gave Ford time to de-bug the Mavericks.

So far my 24 Eco has been flawless.

Yeah, like Tundra did to the F-150,,,,,,,

Hahaha, HRG
Like Toyota did with the RAV4, which it now looks like it's the best selling vehicle in the US after displacing the F-150's 40 year run in the top slot, anyway. If I was a Ford exec, I'd be enjoying the Maverick's absence of competition, and planning for when it arrives - they already proved the segments success by Maverick launching into Ford's #3 spot on their most successful models... Others are going to want a bite of that pie, no doubt.

I remember when they had the giant market push for that. Fire loops and all kinds of tough truck stuff. I remember saying we shall see how they work out when Americans start putting them to work and abuse like they did the 150.
Everyone made a great reliable little truck back then. Needless to say all the talk of taking out the 150 missed slightly. Hell they couldn’t even beat dodge.
I abuse my maverick more than most and it has been a great little truck in the year I have owned it and the 75k miles.

Nissan tried the same with the Titan XD, I had the Cummins model. It was a great truck, for an incredibly cheap price - the only thing really wrong with it was the Cummins, weak sequential turbocharger design and breaking crankshafts at random... No one has been able to challenge Ford in the half-ton slot, and the foreign companies never offered a complete full size truck lineup, they thought they could enter the market with a half-ton only offering. Nope, all basically failed as far as I can tell.

Colorado competes with the Ranger, Tacoma, Frontier, Gladiator and Ridgeline, not with the Maverick or Santa Cruz. I would say even the Santa Cruz doesn't compete with the Maverick, it's more of a silly Scion xB type vehicle than a mini pickup. The Ridgeline is an odd duck too, same size as the other mid-size trucks, with the most interior space, but unibody so limited tow capacity. The Toyota/Subaru truck looks like it will be a true Maverick competitor and I can assure it will not be an EV and will be a hybrid. Toyota is all in on hybrids.

As for 'legendary' Toyota reliability, that's a thing of the past. They've slipped and Ford's have gotten better. I own 5 Ford vehicles and one daughter owns another and we've had zero problems with any of them. 2015 thru 2023 model years.

What I've read/heard about the "Stout" is that Toyota are slammed trying to get Rav4s and the refresh of that out of the door and have no capacity to productionise and produce. Soooo partnering with Subaru might make a lot of sense, if Subaru take on some of that.
