We're moving house and I've got a 17 foot, four person, aluminum canoe that I need to move 40 miles to a new location. It's huge. The last time I had to move it, I had a different vehicle with a roof rack. Now I've got my Hybrid Maverick and I'm not sure she's up to the task. I've seen photos of people transporting 14' fiberglass canoes on the roof, but my canoe is at least 70lbs and I don't know if the roof is designed for that kind of weight.

I'm seeking suggestions for how to go about completing this task. Does anyone have experience moving extra long items with their Maverick? Hoping that I don't have to break the bank to get it there.

I'd strap some extra flotation device; otherwise, a canoe with a maverick is likely to sink . . .

I have an old boat trailer that would get that job done. It needs a little work (lights). I am in SW Oklahoma.

Harbor Freight ladder rack mounted in the bed. Strap it down tight.

I use a receiver hitch extender to haul my 16’ kayak

Drive over it to flatten, fold in half. Joking, Harbor Freight has a cheap receiver bed extender . https://www.harborfreight.com/truck-bed-extender-69650.html
I considered this, but the extender only gives an extra 3 feet at most. The canoe is 17 feet tip to tip. That means 10 feet of very heavy canoe is hanging off the back. The center of mass will be hanging off without support.

The ladder rack suggested above might be the ticket, though.

Unless someone can tell me where to rent a cheap boat/canoe trailer in Ohio?

I presently carry my 12'8" kayak on the rack pictured, and previously a 14' yak. Lightweight plastic so I am quite cognizant of spacing and in the picture is my 2010 Ranger with its six foot bed. I carried my yak on SWMBO's mommy van before I got the Ranger with a bed extender and even with the bow on the dashboard, and across the seats it still stuck out too far to my liking. I have a Mav on order and am considering buying both a ladder rack for the rear of the bed AND an over the cabin rack to get closer to the 6 foot spacing I used to have. (Hoping to find one wanting to do the same so we can split the purchases, lol.) Also wondering which over the cabin rack would be best without damaging the truck's paint.

Check with your nearest canoe rental business.

Back in the 1970's I rented a canoe fairly often to go fishing on a small lake abut 50 miles from home. The rental place had foam cushions that snapped on to the top rails of the canoe. It was no problem to carry it on the roof of my little 1965 Nova. One strap from an eye on the canoe to the front bumper, one strap to the rear bumper.

Looking at the Maverick, the rear strap could go to one of the safety chain eyes on the tow hitch. Up front there are two holes underneath the bumper, at either end, about tho inches across, which give you access to openings in the metal bumper support. I would use two straps attached to those points and the front of the canoe. Just carefully wrap the straps with some microfober cleaning towels (or whatever you think is better) where they contact the bumper.

For something that long I'd either go small trailer or a rack on top of the vehicle (either roof or bed).

OP, you may want to check your local and state ordinances before taking this advice. In my state, hauled items can't overhang the vehicle more than 4 feet.

This is the way I do it, and it's capable of hauling a 17ft aluminum canoe. 14ft canoe pictured, and overhangs the roof about 2 feet.
