Has anyone attempted to carry a cubic yard of top soil or mulch in the bed? If it can be done, loading a cubic yard is significantly cheaper than just using bags at Lowes or Home Depot for example.

It's cheaper but I don't let some guy I don't know with a wheel loader or tractor with a front end loader near my truck. Been there years ago and it wasn't pretty. :)

You should be fine with the cubic yard of mulch 600 to 1000 pounds depending upon moisture content.
A cubic yard of topsoil typically weighs around 2,000 pounds when dry, and can weigh up to 3,000 pounds when saturated. This is a general estimate, and the actual weight can vary based on factors like moisture content and the type of fill dirt.

Final answer
Cubic yard of mulch should be fine 👍
Cubic yard of topsoil you're going to be overloaded.👎

For really heavy bulk stuff, I always liked to borrow my neighbor's trailer for a day.

3 weeks ago I had 28 2 cubic ft bags of soil for my raised beds loaded and drove up from 5k ft elevation to 7700k ft elevation with no issue at all in my 22 EB no tow pkg. And honestly was surprised at the minimum squat..Didn't take pics

someone posted he neatly ( to the top of the bed) carried 45 cu ft in his truck bed. I think that translates into

a guy posted hauling 45 cu ft of bagged mulch ( filled to the top of the bed) which I think is 5 cu yards

I hauled 25 bags, 2 cu ft of bagged mulch per from Lowes. Going that route we didn't have the mess in our truck or driveway and we could spead it out at our leisure. We usually wait when it goes on sale for $2/bag which isn't bad at all.
