Why give an incentive to buy then take it back over time.
what part of "government" wasn't clear?

This is so easy. Tax Tires.

Fair for everyone. At least standardized.
not quite.

Around here (Las Vegas, high desert at over 2000 ft), we don't even look at tread life when buying tires, as it just doesn't matter. The sidewalls go from UV induced dry-rot long before tread comes into play.

I was stunned when told that my tire was past its three year warranty; that just doesn't happen!

Maybe in Texas, definitely not the mix here in northern IL.
Definitely here in Wisconsin, & I am being conservative on that 25 number.

Where do you think the Government Rebate incentives come from? They come from the Goverment. And now the Government wants to charge yearly. Just take away the rebate incentives. No need to charge us.

Here it's like 10 SUV's, 5 Hybrids 2 ICE sedans, and 2 EV's to every pickup.

Well I had to go look to see about my state alternative fuels tax and hybrids. Looks like they defined plug in hybrids as needing to pay the state alternative fuels tax. So maybe I will dodge that bullet with the state tax for the Maverick. I have been eating the cost for my EVs. For those complaining about the free ride EVs get that very much depends on your state. I paid more in tax for my EVs than I would have ever paid in gas taxes in my ICE. Plus they just passed a sales tax at the EV chargers on top of that. EV drivers who live in this state are getting hammered. At least a regular non-plug in hybrid isn't paying the alternative fuels tax for the state. I am wondering if this federal law is going to be specific to plug in hybrids also.

In Washington only plug in hybrids used to get the extra fee, but they closed that loopholle and made it all hybrids. They are supposedly going after high efficiency ICE vehicles too.

It's just stupid. Why not charge extra for small displacement ICE? Or tax by miles driven? Why impose a flat tax at all ? If I have a hydrid and drive no miles Why should I pay road "wear and tear"

The issue I have with this Fed tax is that many of the states are already slapping EV and Hybrid owners with sizeable taxes. I know it is asking a lot for someone in govt at the Fed and state level to find someone with "math skills" to figure out what the tax should be for the person driving the average number of miles and apply some common sense. That still is unfair to those that don't drive that many miles a year, but compared to what appear to be happening right now it will seem like a bargain. Heaviest use roads that require the largest costs may have to go to a toll structure to cover it.
Going to toll roads at least in Texas is not a long term realistic answer as the majority of the toll roads are operated and primarily owned by overseas companies which export the profits. Those monies leave the stateside economy and effectively create a drain much worse than any tax. There are many idiocies that happen. Municipality pushes water saving restrictions and then has to raise the water per gallon rate since they bill for fewer gallons. "Have to break even!".
So...did I sound pissed or like I was looking for a free ride? Was just looking for some discussion on how to make the road tax fair for all.
I think the tire idea sound good - cops just need to start writing tickets for bald tires.
Keep this quiet! Don't want govt to realize that they could put a new tax on BALD DRIVERS!

makes me no difference how they apply/collect the road maintenance fees as long as their fair/equal regardless of the vehicles propulsion method. If we can send people/objects into space, collect data about the solar system and all the other stuff, they should be able to come up with a fair process to charge equally for road usage.

If you have a hybrid and drive zero miles why do you pay insurance? Or even own a hybrid. Be careful if you walk the taxman will tax your feet.
Right on. Just using a hypothetical. Where's the cut off. 200? miles 2000?
My opinion should be near on vehicle weight and miles driven if it's to be equitable.

Unfortunately, people here are not that smart. Truck guys ask if my little truck gets around 20 mpg, I say no, it's almost always over 30, then I get but, but ,but ....

I understand a fee for BEVs, but doesn't make sense for hybrids. If you own a hybrid, your are paying gas tax and then another fee on top of that. This is just punishment to people who are trying to be more efficient. If fee passes for hybrids, I see it being repealed at some point.

Those questions are a governance issue. They should not be contracting this out and most especially to overseas owners/operators. The lack of transparency is pretty bad.

There are opportunities to improve express ways, bypasses, and certain road sections and use a toll system to manage it if properly managed. Sadly the road taxes appear to go into a general slush fund and that is used for anything. So back to governance issues and little accountability.

I generally am opposed to tolls, but I would take that over the push for lowjacking vehicles and paying by the mile and the other implications that probably come with it.
