like Toyota, Huydia has also been having a rough time with its engine blocks in fact all manufactures are having a tough time with various issues. Hopefully they all Ironed them out soon.

Although the Hyundai has that long warranty,
it's inconvenient to actually need it. Of course at that point, it's good to have it.

About two years ago, the engine in my wife's 2018 Tuscon with well under 60K miles failed in a similar fashion. The engine was replaced under warranty at no cost to us, but it was very disappointing to say the least. We traded it last fall for a 2025 Mazda, we didn't even consider looking at a new Hyundai. Clearly they haven't sorted out the fundamental issue.

We currently drive 2 Hyundais (Hyundaii?). Our '16 Sonata (75k miles) was purchased with a CPO warranty. It has been experiencing a well-documented oil consumption issue. It was bad enough that it caused a fouling of spark plugs, which we had to replace at our own expense (not covered by warranty).

While the oil consumption continues, Hyundai has refused to service it under the CPO warranty, saying it's normal to use a quart of oil every 1000 miles.

So, yeah... no more Hyundais for us. Can't wait for the Mav to arrive.

Had heard of Hyundai/Kia oil usage issues but this tops that by a wide margin. This definitely confirms my decision to buy the Maverick over the Santa Cruz was a sound choice.

Does it pass emissions testing? I would think Hyundai would have to fix it.

I was following a Santa Cruz the other day and noticed it was puffing smoke everytime they accelerated from the stop light which really surprised me

Had just about the same issue with a (2007 I believe?) Toyota RAV4 4cyl, took it to a Toyota expert mechanic locally who works on classic Toyota cars and he let us know that it was a known/common issue with that specific engine just guzzling oil. Freaked me out to have to put in oil that frequently, it would go nearly dry if you went a full month of driving without pouring some in.

In fairness, Maverick hybrid owners should probably remember the hundreds of postings about dead hybrids, including just stopping on the highway with family inside.

For the Maverick crowd to be slinging mud at the Santa Cruz is the height of casting stones when you live in a glass house.

What failed on the Santa Cruz? Oil filter fall off? This Santa Cruz is listed for sale on Apple Ford website. Santa Cruz CPO certified. AutoCheck history is provided. No major engine repair or replacement are noted. As result my BS meter is pointing at Todd and Austin. Did the engine blow or did Todd and Austin blow it?

This was a common problem in the Gen2 Prius where the oil rings get gunked up and don't stop the oil from getting into the combustion chamber. Most others swore by a full top end flush piston soak, but that seemed too messy and risky to me, so I found an easy remedy that drastically reduced my oil consumption. I just used a cheap Motor Medic Engine Flush with every oil change, make sure you have oil and just add the bottle and idle for maybe a little less than the 5 minutes it says and it cleans really well, the oil comes out black and stays cleaner longer and I didn't have to add any oil between changes any more. They make more expensive products like BG 44K you can try too, but the $10 Motor Medic stuff worked great. Still check your oil between changes and top off if needed of course.
