That is what jack stands prevent. Bu,per jacks were adequate for changing a flat on level ground. Great at removing bumpers with rusted in two bolts.
yeah unfortunately there were far too many novices who put way too much faith in the bumper jack alone not even thinking about the need for additional safeguards

always good idea to get one of those plug repair kits - it you can locate the nail/screw you can do the fix without having to take the wheel off - it's a great 7 dollar investment
Always be aware to take the plugged tire to a tire shop when you get back. The main reason over time there is a strong possibility that the plug can be cut by the steel belts of the tire. I personally prefer a plug/patch of the tire and means to remove the tire and doing it properly

agree - always better to do it the right way as long as you and not in a bind - if you're 'way over there' at night with nobody around then instead of toying with the spare pull out the patch kit and your inflator and you can be on your way in 15 minutes. In my younger days I'd just plug it myself regardless - and , really, probably out of 7 or 8 I've plugged - never had a leak from that spot again.

Oh heck, I used to use a bumper jack on my rusty 68 Impala to crawl under and wire up my exhaust with a coat hanger. It's called evolution (not sure how I slid through).
Survival of the fitest. Or you just may have been really lucky. 😆

I had a friend in high school who watched his father die doing exactly that . Jack slipped while he was under the car. The trauma still haunts him 50 years later. Don't be that guy!
I had a ford escort slip of the jack in high school while I was under it. Luckily, the tire was still on. It came down and thumped my chest and the shocks brought it back up to where I could slide out. First time I tried one of those jacks. I am a thicker now, would probably turn out differently.

I have plugged plenty of tires in my life and have never taken them to a shop for more work.

**Flat tires are the number one cause of vehicle impairment. KNOW how to change a tire. And those little jack stands they give us actually work pretty well.

And yes by all means, KNOW how to remove the spare tire before you HAVE to learn on the side of the road.

Oh yeah, one other thing I discovered during a dry run changing a tire... The tailgate has to be closed to lower the spare, so if you pick up a nail or screw on your way home with a load of drywall in the bed, you're totally "screwed". Thank you Ford. Hope you saved a whole lot of money on the tire winch.
Similar situation to trucks (and suvs) that have the spare under the cargo area—that is you gotta remove the cargo to get at it.

Anyway, thanks this is good to know. It raises the question: can the jack even handle raising the truck with a full load?

Shame on your salesman for not showing you this when you took delivery / test drive of your truck.
Ha! Are you kidding me? When we took delivery of our 2023 XLT a year ago, the salesman handed us the keys and said “bye.”
We got no test drive, no walk-through of the truck’s features.

They had no knowledge of the Maverick, having had only a few been delivered to them at that time. No one there who knew enough about them to show us stuff.

But that’s Ok. We figured most of it out ourselves, eventually. (Thanks to this forum, mostly.)

One morning at our donuts, a club member came a bit bewildered.

IIRC, his Cadillac is '49, and he was holding the manual.

The jack is about a three inch cylinder, without a big square plate.

It attaches to the rim of the tire.

You jack it up, and use a stand to hold it up!

This from a day in which most roads weren't paved . . .

So my wife says, can you fit the crockpot inside the Maverick along with a few other things and I said sure no problem … not being sure really I ventured outside and started by pushing the front passenger seat forward meanwhile, I’m thinking I’ll be able to flip the backseat bottom up while I maneuver the full crockpot to the floorboard. I got agitated a few times before putting stuff under the rear seat bottom and having to use my shoulder to keep the seat bottom up so I gave it a good shove towards the seat back and Wala! It latched in the upward position !!! Then I released it by simply pulling the same loop that’s used to unlatch it. ….
I thought silly me must have missed it in the owners manual, but I couldn’t find anything in the owners manual describing the seat bottom stays latched in the up position.. Bonus !! I thought to myself

Yes , a bumper jack , and then maybe a cinder block or two and scraps of wood as stands ....
My parents bought me a pair of jackstands while I was in high school , didn't want to see me crushed .
After 50+ years I still use them !

They also bought me a Krauter ratchet and socket set , which I still use ....

....memories....
I can relate. My parents gave a set of ramps (also > 50 years ago) that I still use - used them to change the oil in my Maverick last week. Also have some tools that belonged to my dad and father in law. Prized possessions.
