Adding an extra battery is like adding an extra gallon of gas is all I'm saying.

It will not change the performance of the truck.
An extra gallon of gas is less than 7lbs. Assuming that you're going to need the heating/cooling components, extra wiring, etc, I would assume that you will need maybe 200lbs of extra weight just to extend the existing pack with a second battery. That's going to drop your mileage by maybe 2mpg or so. The $2300 for the extra battery pack will get you another 1.1mi before the engine kicks in. That's most definitely not worth it.
If you add the very expensive 11kw battery from the PHEV Escape, that's going to get you maybe 6 or 7 more miles before the engine kicks in, but you're going to need to seriously upgrade the battery cooling circuit to do that.
If you added the battery from the Mustang, that gets you decent electric range, but nowhere to put that much battery (maybe fill the box?), you need to support over a ton of extra weight and it would take forever to charge without plugging it into the wall.

The Escape Plug-In hybrid uses the same 2.5L as the Maverick and is FWD. Path of least resistance would probably be to get a wrecked /salvaged title donor, swap the applicable bits and hope Ford is big on parts bin re-use for compatibility. Without a good breakdown of sensors, harnesses, computer modules and mounting brackets I have no idea how big of a job it would be. Forscan reprogramming would be a given.
You can't write the missing code using Forscan, all you can do is alter parameter tables. Realistically the only option would be to take the entire electrical system including even the radio (cuz it does more than just radio) from the donor Escape.

My group of tinkerers in 2007 we just home built a LiIon pack and put it behind the rear seat of the passenger compartment. It only needed to be air cooled. If passengers could tolerate being inside, the battery could tolerate it also.

Second; we only had to tap and splice a single data wire. Can you guess which one? We did no reprogramming. But sure, cars were a bit more simple in 2005. (MY 2005 to 2007 were the same.) But, 99% sure the concept would work on Mavericks. But it's true...

Other than for the fun of it (hobby) there's no wonderful advantage to it really.

a plug in escape( Kuga) in the uk is about 8 thousand pounds more than the regular hybrid, so i'm sure to DIY a maverick would cost you more

Easy to do in 2 basic steps.
1. Sell Maverick.
2. Purchase PHEV.
I would absolutely do that if there was a phev maverick. But alas... there is not so...

I've read this is possible with some hybrids but wondering if anyone has heard of it done with a maverick. Since I drive mostly locally I'd love to be able to get 20-30 miles without the ICE kicking in.

Anyone?
Lots of work and investment there. Plus electricity isn't free.
Getting 46mpg already in my Mav. Pretty happy already.

We are in the infancy of the automobile electric age. What i vision is a more efficient battery. It will be a sold state design more stable, no liquid, lighter, less chance of fire and more range. I believe they are being installed in homes and business but not in cars yet. The con is they will be more expensive. Chances are they will be in cars when most of us need battery replacement. the idea of a plug in conversion is iffy just wait the next 5 to 10 years batteries will evolve like the computer chip has. frank

I once took a Datsun 2L PU and put in a Chevy 327.
Was it fun? Yes.
Did I learn a lot? Yes.
Would I do it again? NO!!!
I did not do it so I could save money.
It was a project and it cost me a LOT of money.
Not making any judgements, just perspective.

The hardest part is getting the cash to do it.

As I have participated in, and watched someone else turn an Escape HEV to a PHEV I can say it's not difficult. It is expensive. And you will give up space in your back seat, (because it's already weather-proof) for not much gain.

It won't become a part-time EV.
It will just boost MPG.
Your engine will still run in those first 20-50 miles. But will run at 60 to 80 MPG vs. the current 30 to 40 MPG.

The behavior won't change. Only the MPG.

Bought an Escape plugin hybrid. It has the same hybrid as the Maverick with a 14 kwh battery. The electric range is 37 miles. The price was discounted quite a lot to make it cost effective, but I am sure that Ford will offer it for the Maverick eventually.
