We know Toyota announced that they will be releasing a version of the Tacoma as a hybrid or even as a full electric!

It seems like it will be a while before it happens. How come Toyota never attempted this much earlier having a well established and pioneered the hybrid engine on their Prius and Rav4.

Will it be worth the wait? Will it be priced competetively like the Maverick? I think it will do well with the mpg but how about payload and towing at a lower price point?

Something to think about while at work!

Just google Toyota hybrid. Nothing substantial yet. Just a concept.

That's because the current BoF of the Tacoma dates back to beginning development around year 2000. It was introduced for the 2005/6 model year for the 2nd generation and was massaged for 2016-current 3rd generation. They are slowly making the move to their new TNGA-F platform for BoF vehicles. The new platform will have electrification baked into the design to accept such technologies. Keep in mind the current Tacoma is a heavy vehicle, just about the weight of modern half-ton fullsize truck in some instances. It is currently underpowered, especially for low end torque. I couldn't image it with any of their new "Dynamic Force" 2.0 or 2.5 NA engines or even their RAV4 Prime powertrain to be honest.

I would NOT wait for Toyota, unless you knew they were about 8-12 months out. They are a slow and frustrating brand to follow, especially if you like new and modern things. You would be waiting until 2024/2025 until next generation Tacoma. Pretty sure Tundra, Sequoia and 4Runner are all in line first to get the new chassis architecture. Expect the Tacoma to get more expensive for 4th generation.

If Ford and even Hyundai, can prove the segment is sizeable and growing, it could be plausible for Toyota to enter the unibody compact truck segment. I'm not having good luck with my 2019 Tacoma, but I would have given a Toyota competitor a look that competed directly to the Maverick.

The beauty of not being brand loyal.

I would not bet on Toyota anything of value. By the time they release something, you would need Maverick replacement.

My 2019 Tacoma has been the worst vehicle I have owned. It is up to 7 unscheduled maintenance visits in 20,000 miles. It is a shop queen. Sits in my driveway because after 2.75 years, I can't stand it and most of the issues remain unresolved. I don't really put much into perceived reliability much any more.

The Tacoma’s base price is above the Maverick’s base. Then when you start adding options plus hybrid power train etc the Taco’s get very expensive quickly. They are great but out of my price point (I’m cheap). Toyota will also not give away there hybrid power train like it seems Ford is doing.

Sits in my driveway because after 2.75 years, I can't stand it and most of the issues remain unresolved. I don't really put much into perceived reliability much any more.
I had a 2019 TRD off road long bed. I was happy when I sold it, and don’t miss it a bit. I had the transmission reflashed 3 or 4 times. It was not a good match to the engine, I could not use cruise control unless the road was flat due to the constant shifting. Got 11 mpg towing an empty utility trailer. It had all the disadvantages of a full size with none of the advantages.

A hybrid of a near at a near size and price? You bet. I've had three Fords in the past, but my best cars/trucks were Hondas, Toyotas and Datsuns.

That begs the question. Why does Toyota hail their hybrids as if they are cream of the crop while Ford is basically giving it away? We know to some degree, it's the same technology but what's the catch?

Yes, cruise control is an absolute joke on my Tacoma. It also holds the lower gear way too long after the hill levels out. The powertrain is downright frustrating for daily driving. The howling rear differential. The ridiculous amount of interior rattles, especially when the weather turns anything less than 45 degrees F. The scary soft brake pedal, of which they claim nothing is wrong, just to name a few.
