The point is to get people to buy 'Made in America'.
I would call It a victory if the Tariff forced
Ford to move all manufacturing back inside the 48 states
and employ American workers.
All Ford would have to do Is factor in a greater cost of labor.
I doubt that would raise the price more than 10 to 12%
BUT My Ford's would be American Made and I'd gladly pay more for that !

Now If we could get Ford to make Its own parts, Like Elon did with Tesla.
He made so much money that he is now paving the way to build Star Ships at a rate of 100 per month.
His Cyber truck plant Is In Texas. Not Mexico.

If this comment was tongue in cheek, well done. If not, I’d research Elon’s contribution to the environment in Texas. The biggest reason he moved his operations there was because he wants to operate unshackled, and Texas will gladly accommodate that. California wouldn’t. As a Texan, the threats to our health and environment are constant. Whether petrochemicals, fracking, or rocket launches, there’s a reason Texas constantly lands in the bottom 10% for quality of life.

He moved because the Democrats kept postponing his applications to launch with tens of millions of dollars on the line. Texas won't do that, they understand the importance of BUSINESS. Besides, Texas has WATER!

As someone who is politically moderate, if there even is such a thing anymore, I don't disagree with the spirit of returning manufacturing to the US, but it's a more complex issue than enacting tariffs to protect industry.

Issue 1 - Immediate price shock on vehicles assembled in Mexico. After the insane increases in vehicle prices over the past 4-5 years, the only decent cars left around the $20K price point are stuff like the Nissan Versa and Kicks (Mexico), and a few Korean products. Being generous with decent here, and definitely not including the Mitsubishi Mirage, which is terrible. A car that runs and drives, reliably gets you to work, isn't horrible to be in, and will probably last 100k miles with routine maintenance.

Issue 2 - Korean cars? I have nothing against them, but why would Mexico be punished so hard while imports from Korea get a pass, for now. GM is also bringing cars in from their Korean subsidiary, which again on issue 1, the Trax / Envista is one of the few good cheap vehicles you can buy.

Issue 3 - How are legacy automakers (Ford, GM, Stellantis) possibly going to make economy cars in the US at a profit? All previous attempts have failed, even when the cars were competitive (Focus, Cruze for example) and nothing has fundamentally changed the equation.

the reason Canada and Mexico are initially targeted is because they are our borders.
