Mine will do that (not start up when the screen is locked) after Android Auto or the phone OS updates. I have to re-enable it occasionally. To do that you can go into your phone's settings, navigate to "Connected devices" or "Android Auto" settings, and ensure the option "Start Android Auto while locked" is toggled on.Sometimes I have to unlock the phone for the Android auto to work. Most of the time I don't.
