Hi all,

So I've created a slight problem for myself. Plan was originally to keep my 17' XLT grey rims and tires for summer and grab some inexpensive winters to swap out...tried to look for same size so as not to worry about speedometer stuff and all that hubbub.

I ended up finding and buying a gorgeous set of rims and winter tires, literally showroom quality with lots of tread left. Only prob is, they are 18s. I could leave them as is but man these are too nice to run in the winter. The previous owner knew how to take care of them.

So now, I'm looking for 18s to swap out winter/summer tires, but I'm soooooo hesitant in trying to sell the XLT takeoffs. Plus I dont even know where to start since there's so little Canadian Mav owners resources for this stuff.

So to summarize:
  • I bought sexy instead of smart.
  • I need to find/buy 18s with summers to swap out
  • I may have to sell my XLT takeoffs because I'd literally have no use for them.
I've been scouring Kijiji and Facebook marketplace and feel I'm running out of time. Anyone else have any good ideas or even know how much 5000km takeoffs would go for?

When do you plan on selling/trading the Mav? And when you do, which set of wheels would bring the best offer? Answering those questions will help inform your decision.

IMO, you've already spent money on the 18s, and anything you buy further will be more money spent on what was supposed to be an inexpensive truck. If it were me, I'd use the winter set as intended and reap the benefits of the OEM set lasting longer and looking better when you trade. But that's just me.

I'm sure I'll get flamed for this, but there's a reason why some owners that modify their vehicles keep the original parts.

Excellent observations, and you touched right on why I didn't want to sell the takeoffs.

This truck has changed my driving habits and style for the better (plus it's my first new vehicle, always bought used). I don't really plan on getting something else or trading this in at all, other than a deal I can't refuse or maybe a newer better version of the Mav for free or better. Unlikely scenarios but after all the waiting and just outright loving the truck it would be hard to sell it.

As for using the sexy rims as winters, it's such a waste. It's like sure, you "can" go out in the slush/salt/snow, but it's just not right...but it's still an option. Maybe the last option.

Personally I've been trying to secure the 18' FX4 black rims since the beginning but seems like everyone likes them too.

Why not put winter tires on your oem wheels? Sell the tires that are on them.

Winter tires - 18 inch
XLT wheels - 17 inch

Will not fit.

On a side note, I saw a set of summer tires online (265/60/18). Anyone know if 265 would rub while driving/turning?

Just use the winter tires/rims you bought & keep the stock wheels, if you sell or trade you may take a hit for non stock rims. This way you don't have to worry about mounting & balancing more wheels. Just a couple weeks ago I scored a set of steelies complete with caps tps & tires that had no more than couple hundred miles on them, so now I have a complete replacement set of tires & rims to put winter tires on.

I'm following mainly to see if you're going to sell your XLT take offs. Let me know, I'm in Toronto as well.

Thats the backup and absolute last ditch plan. It's just so hard as I bought these with those intentions for an amazing price...but then realizing the condition they are in I feel it'd literally be a sin to load them up in the snow and slush. I just thought they were oh normal good tires with ok rims and be done with it.

Search continues!

Just use them in the winter. They will clean up okay. Perhaps a solution will come in time. I'm looking for wheels and snows myself. 2WD with traction control will do just fine. (Quick install chains, just in case) I'm so-so on the wheels that come with the XLT. I like the wheels I saw with a slightly older Bronco.

Those bronco wheels are sweet. Saw some mav with it on here.

All I really need is someone with a FX4 package saying "oh I wish I had smaller gunmetal rims like the XLT" and lived fairly close by haha.

The stock XL rims are inexpensive right from Ford if you wanted to mount your winter tires
