Has anyone had a problem with loss of battery energy in the winter, or does the ICE kick in?

The high voltage battery will not be as efficient in cold weather. Your all-electric capabilities will be diminished (not that it does a lot of all-electric driving anyway). The ICE will have to be on more than it would in other weather. So MPG may go down a lot in the cold weather, but the hybrid vehicle will work just fine.

Haven't had my hybrid Maverick in winter weather yet, but I have had other hybrids. The difference in MPG in winter (here in Western NY) vs other times of the year was quite a lot, but understandable.

I'm really curious on how the hybrid will perform in Canada. I know with the cold temps the battery will not be as efficient but will it still be worth going with the hybrid? 99% of my miles are city miles. Does the gain of mileage out weight the cost of losing the AWD? Any Canadians out here that have had time with the hybrid in winter??

Fuel economy goes down on all IC vehicles in cold weather due to the need address engine driveability needs and the call for cabin heat. In a non-plug in hybrid the high voltage battery is constantly being charged and discharged and kept within closely defined parameters by the battery control software. My Prius gets roughly 10% poorer economy during the winter in southern Ontario, which is in line with regular vehicles previously owned.

Yes, the fuel economy outweighs other factors, for myself anyway. My fuel economy is 5.1 l/100km over 2500ish kms. At $2 a litre and a less expensive vehicle to begin, with there's no debate.

Coming from an Avalache it will seem like driving for free :D

It's FWD, and we need snows anyway.

Cheers.
