Did you know? Winter driving comes with risks—late November often brings heavy snowfalls, and cold weather can reduce tire pressure and battery power. It’s also easy to forget the tools and floor mats that can save you in a roadside emergency or during the snow/ice cleanup.
With 30% OFF sitewide for Black Friday, now’s the perfect time to get your ride winter-ready.

I never put food in my kits. I use the space for important stuff.

I like to have spare clothes - nothing like being able to get into something dry when cold and wet. I don't drive in big, bulky, warm gear but it is nice to have it in the vehicle. Especially warm mitts/gloves.

Having a ham radio never hurts either - way more reliable than cell service in my area. If I ever get around to installing an HF rig in the Maverick I should be able to add another layer of comms.

Where I live it is hard to truly be remote, but it isn't always easy to walk from where you might get stranded to where the houses you could help from are so I tend to keep my snowshoes in the truck once the snow flies.

After 60 years of driving I would suggest the following so you never have to use the gear:

Forget hard acceleration until next spring.
Plan on taking twice as long to come to a full stop.
Never slam on the brakes (and leave enough space
between you and the nerd ahead so you don't have to.)
Take time with your lane changes--no sharp wheel turns
(Unless you're on glare ice, of course, in which case
you'll just keep going straight anyway.)
If your back end starts to swing out, back off on the gas
and turn in the same direction the back end is going.
If you can't see farther than a car length ahead of you,
don't start out (this is the voice of bad experience
speaking!) or pull over.
Pray.

Since I'm in the mountains on forest service roads often, I also have at least 1 GMRS radio, spare change of clothes that changes with the seasons, lighter, small packable stove and isobutane fuel.

I'm 7/9 on the Winter Road Trip checklist. Missing the portable jump starter and tow strap. Ford roadside covers that for 5 yr/ 60k and I'm at 41k. Might come in handy after that, but until then I'm gonna defer that cost and call roadside.
