Tangental to your question, you might consider replacement with the acoustic windshield that Lariat's have. It will add a bit of quietness. Just a thought.

I absolutely love the word tangential, it’s rarely used and as a word smith I appreciate it Oscarcat. And no I’m not being sarcastic.

I'm In the same boat up here in Maine. I didn't notice the hit until a few days later. I remember the sound of the hit but it was night and didn't see anything at the time... I was wrong

Yeh...whenever I hear a hit on my car windshields I usually check them over when I can. If I hear it and its loud or scares me I know it did damage somewhere on the windshield....hopefully only a pit and not in the line of sight. I've been lucky for the last few years so I am overdue on one of my cars! Only one small pit so far on the Maverick directly in the windshield center so out of sight basically. Roads are in poor condition with a lot of crap on them nowadays compared to a decade or two ago. Trucks constantly dropping stones on the roads too!

There are coverings available that are similar to PPF for paint. Starting to look into them. My Lariat windshield is already cracked as well (3 weeks old?).

if it's big enough to see, fill it. there could be stress points not readily seen.

If you have Progressive in Texas, they just added an option last fall for 0$ glass deductible. Had to raise my deductible from $250 to $500 for comprehensive, but worth it.

I looked at PPF for windshields, but eventually that will look like crap and need replaced, I would rather just let insurance eat it every once and awhile on a new windshield.

I waited for a major crack to get my 1st windshield replaced. First damage had to get a chip filled and I wasn't even at 1,000 miles, right smack in front of the drivers view. Epoxy cured and left it super noticeable after about 2-3 weeks. 2nd Damage was around 4500 miles and near a corner, so with a little arm twisting I got the whole windshield replaced, and they used OEM glass. Had to pay up front for the difference between OEM and whatever 3rd party Safelite uses, but I got a check in a week to reimburse me.

Currently at about 5,600, and just picked up my first damage, 2 small chips that are deep enough to catch your fingernail. Lasted like 3 months with the glass perfect.

And before the people that chime in " you follow too close" blah blah blah, no I don't. My last damage was probably about 10+ car lengths from the next closest vehicle. I think it just has to do with the angle of the windshield and height from the road, my last vehicle was a 2003 Toyota Matrix, and I had that for over 200k and never got a rock chip.

Good luck in Texas avoiding the pavement princess brodozers with overpriced super aggressive tires that are ripe for picking up gravel and flinging it.

All my windhshield issues are caused by trucks speedng by (coming or going) and some not having any mudflaps on to prevent this. I avoid them at all costs...esp those rednecks with a truck jacked up 3 extra feet with off road tires and no mudflaps whatsoever...should be illegal..

I recently changed insurance carriers to one that has the same - $0 glass deductible. I have an independent agent who seems willing to share more info about the companies he represents than a dedicated company-specific agent probably would. Apparently (with my company, at least), a glass claim counts as a claim, the same way an actual accident would. Make a glass claim more than once, and I was told to expect a rate increase. They get their money back from you pretty quick that way. No idea if Progressive works the same way.

Don't you just love how ins companies engineer these coverage plans? (n)

And I'd be doubtful that there is anything you can apply to a windshield, whether it's a plastic film, coating, chemical, etc., would be able to stop the damage of a rock at speed.

I just cracked my windshield last thursday while on the way to a camping trip. Now the crack is 2 feet long so I have started looking into how much it cost to replace.

I love my truck, but I hate the OEM windshield! I drove my last truck 12 years without so much as a small ding on the windshield! This is the second chip in less than 6 months in my Maverick. The first one was a small chip directly in front of the driver's view, but it was small enough that they could fill it. I could still see it, but it wasn't all that noticeable after a while. I saw the small rock coming, but too late to do anything about it. But this second one is a doozy! It sounded like a gunshot in the cab, and I only heard one impact, but the Safelite tech said it's clearly two hits very close together. I never saw that one. Too much damage to fill this time. At least I won't have that other small chip fill spot in my sight line while driving anymore.
