I would think that a persons drivers license number would be what an employer would use. That's what I've provided in the past.

What happens if a person doesn't own a vehicle and the employer asks for their vehicles plate number?
They mark N/A on the form lol. "I don't have a vehicle".

Well, no offense to the great folks who host this forum. But on the list of risks that I face in this world, letting someone see my license plate number because I posted a photo here, doesn't even register. YMMV.

I‘ve noticed that some here make sure to obscure their license plate when posting photos of their truck, and I was wondering: why? After all, anyone on the street can see and read the license plate. So it’s no secret. And if there was some risk to having someone read your license plate, wouldn’t someone nearby represent a greater threat to you than someone on the Internet, who is likely to be hundreds or even thousands of miles away? No one (other than a cop) can read your license plate and get any personal information about you from your state’s DMV. So I guess I don’t understand how there is any risk to having my license plate visible in a photo here. Can anyone clue me in about the risk?
One reason I can think of is many states with toll roads or electronic sensors use licenses as a back up for payment. Someone can print a picture of the license and crooks can put it on a vehicle. Not saying they do that but in theory.

Guess you live in a different world than others.

Why would I want to add a risk to loved ones when I can simply blurr a photo to reduce that risk?

What if you rub someone the wrong way on the internet?

Basic reducing of risk.

So why post this thread then? You clearly already knew you were going to scoff at any information obtained. Shitposting at it's finest.

Well license registrations are public records.
I guess because I live in California where plate information is restricted I'm looking at this different than others.

Any residence address in any record of the department is confidential and shall not be disclosed to any person, except a court, law enforcement agency, or other government agency, or as authorized in Section 1808.22 or 1808.23.
Looks like certain business's like insurance companies are excluded.

In theory, yes, they could print a license plate, that may or may not be readable by the tool road's sensor.

The more likely scenario is that crooks will steal your license plate and use that for the toll bridges. CT requires one on the front and the other in the back. By the time it realized that one of them is gone, the crook already used it a number of times and it'll cost close to a hundred bucks in tolls in the NYC Metro area. That's the easy part. Then one need to file a policy report, where the cop will argue that the plate was just lost. The date on the police report is the cut off to stop paying for the tolls. That's not the end of it yet. The stolen license plate is reported to the DMV and order a new set, can't just get a replacement. That means a new registration for the vehicle. What a mess....

If you think this is far fetched, you'd be wrong. It happened to me couple of years ego and the above is just the highlight what I had to go through....

I think after reading this post, I can see the pros of blurring your plate, but I don’t really see any cons. By posting online, and making comments that people don’t like, if someone saw my truck they could say, “hey, that is that D!¢¥ head on MTC, who has an offensive name and listens to the band tool. I am going to follow him home and…” I think it just adds a layer of anonymity. Thanks @Montana for making some really valid points.
