I‘ve noticed that some here make sure to obscure their license plate when posting photos of their truck, and I was wondering: why? After all, anyone on the street can see and read the license plate. So it’s no secret. And if there was some risk to having someone read your license plate, wouldn’t someone nearby represent a greater threat to you than someone on the Internet, who is likely to be hundreds or even thousands of miles away? No one (other than a cop) can read your license plate and get any personal information about you from your state’s DMV. So I guess I don’t understand how there is any risk to having my license plate visible in a photo here. Can anyone clue me in about the risk?
Habit, maybe?
I used to do market research for a company that purchased lists of car buyers in the areas where they were working, and we'd call (for example) people in Ohio who purchased a 2023 Ford Maverick and ask them their impressions of the vehicle: the likes and dislikes and things they'd like to see on their next one. Some people would be super-suspicious..."how do you know what I bought? Where'd you get my name and number?" I'd explain that their information is available for purchase from the Secretary of State, and to contact their SOS if they're upset about it.

I'd rather not have someone on some random forum know if the vehicle they see on the street or in my driveway is linked to this account. Why else? :ROFLMAO:

If that's not something that concerns you, why don't you use your real full name for your user name here? :p

Well, what I still can't figure out, if anyone on the street can see my license plate, why it suddenly becomes a risk if they can see it on an Internet forum. I guess I need to dust my tin foil hat off. ;)
Well, look at it this way. Would you post up your name, address, and phone number?
This info can be gotten from a plate, maybe not by anyone but still.
So post up your info and take your tin foil hat off, I dare you. :D

Paranoia will destroy ya! I never got it either. Good luck trying to be anonymous in our world today.

there are enough weird people out there (not necessarily here of course) who'd run w / that lic plate number and find out exactly who you are and where you live - so if you post something later that they are hot about they know just who you are and where you live. Different states have different access rules - sometimes a LPNo is part of public records and easily accessible. No harm in blurring it out.
