It appears that the mud flap is far enough away from the exhaust pipe that it does not need to be open like this.
It lets too much mud, sand, etc get past the flap and all over the left rear of the car. This is a Mabett flap.
Why doesn't this flap cover as well as the right rear flap?

?? Are you complaiming that it throws too much dirt etc onto the underneath of the vehicle (not to the outside rear fender)? I have the Ford aftermarket oems on and the the left and right appear to be the same size on each axle...plus they look nicer and are more molded to the fenders with deeper grooves in them.

Billy2mav. Fronts are great. I am talking about the back flap. I got the Mabett because they are flat and there is no chance they will wear off any paint. Even if you apply tape, eventually any bad spot will wear thru the tape and then the paint. I would like to keep this truck 10 years or more.

Because FORD.

There are mudflaps that solve the issue or you can get creative. Multiple threads where people have done that already. But the easiest one is just to buy mudflaps that cover it, like the RokBlokz. And before you ask, no, it doesn't melt with the exhaust. There is plenty of space. It's no different than how close the rest of that corner on your flaps already is.

AFAIK, RokBlokz mudflap has the best coverage, the main reason I've got rid of the OEM mudflaps. This is the view from the back:

And no, it did not melt during the last 8 - 9 month...

Same here. Members report that the OEM flaps rub off the truck's paint where they wrap around the fender edge. It would be nice if the LR flap was larger. However, I live on a gravel/dirt road that is currently muddy - so far, mud has not accumulated on the inside wall of the LR fender.

The left and right rear Mabett mud flaps have the same coverage. What is different is the truck's wheel well.

I suggest taking Montana's advice from post #7 and research other threads about an easy modification to cover the space. Or get the Rokblokz brand, if you can afford them.

It’s ultimately something that happens with many mudflap brands, but it’s really due to the truck itself and not a problem with a mudflap. If you inspect the passenger rear wheel well, AND BEHIND IT, you will see a large black factory plastic cover. This cover fills the “mudflap gap” and exposes the real issue at hand—the huge cavern behind it going into the box side and tail light. As others have said elsewhere, you could stuff a football up there.

The plastic cover is missing/nonexistent on the driver’s side, allowing all kinds of debris to be tossed up into the driver’s side inner box/tail light. If you search, you will find plenty of posts regarding the lack of a cover for the driver’s side. Some fabricate their own mud flap extension. Some fashion a cover for the entire gap below the tail light.

For what it’s worth, I too bought the Mabetts after doing my research and deciding they were best for me. They are affordable, durable, and won’t touch the paint. I built my own filler piece to cover this gap you pointed out. I found the RokBlokx, while nice, to be way out of my price range. I would buy the Mabetts again.
