Looks like I can barely afford my new Maverick hybrid when it's delivered in late march or early April (ft Myers fl).
XLT with floor mats
Trailer hitch
$650 drivers package.

what should I do? Sell it? ?
Can't sell it until you actually sign papers and pay for it, (then it's yours). Just decline it and move on, you still have an easy out.

If you don't think you can afford the truck, then how could you afford gambling on buying it and hoping to resell it at a profit? The market has changed vastly and there is no situation in which accepting delivery and trying to offload it will end with a net benefit for you. You're not missing an opportunity, you're avoiding a financial mistake.

Yes, gambling without the “table stakes.”

You know what you can afford, so that is your decision. What is the $650 driver package. I have never seen that option you must be a dealer add-on? You can refuse that but you need to let him know well I had a Time in writing

Great question. I'd have to tighten the family belt for at least 4 years to afford. Not sure it's worth that. I current drive a Mercedes e class diesel with great power and mpg that serves me and the family well. I might but be able afford the payments but am looking for better option than outright rejection.
Within the next 4 years I'm sure a few things you were not counting on will occur. The last thing you need is a problem in life you never expected. Right now you have a vehicle that's paid for, reliable, low insurance cost etc. You will not make money by trying to flip the truck, pass on taking it, and when you need another vehicle shop for a dealer certified used Maverick. I'm sure finding one later will not be that hard.

Thanks everyone I appreciate the advice. I'm a long time "lurker" and want the maverick but money is tight.

Some macroeconomic factors are in your favor if you pass on delivery. Rates ware expected to drop over the next year or two. Some of us suspect Maverick production is slowly catching up with demand. In a recession, like maybe this December, we may even see Ford moving Mavericks with small incentives on the hood (or the zero rate we got back in 2022) - stranger things have happened.

The first rule for improving a financial situation is always to stop digging. Buying a new vehicle usually (not always) qualifies as digging the hole deeper. As somebody said above, it's a depreciating asset.

Lots of good advice on the forum. Here is what I would do:
Immediately start putting that Maverick payment amount into a savings account. Decline the 2024 Maverick. If you are good with your remaining budget after putting the payment into savings for several months, then order a 2025.

I have a friend who wasn't sure he wanted his and the dealer offered him $1000 to walk away. Feel them out, you never know.
Just picked mine up yesterday.

I've always said that if I had to take 4+ years to pay for a vehicle, I couldn't afford it. I have paid cash for the last 4 vehicles - two were new and two were used.

Taking on a borderline-unaffordable car payment is like agreeing to barely keep your head above water. And that's barring any unforeseen financial surprises that may throw you even deeper down the debt rabbit hole.

The MSRP on that build is $30, 335. What kind of sales tax & fee's are adding $4K, or are you including a dealer ADM? I don't see any way to purchase and flip that makes you any money.

Florida dealers including Ft. Myers charge around $1k for fees and may be $300 after market floor mats. Nitrogen fill is also a thing with other options would be around $599. Tax is depends on your county. In Lee county would be around$2k. Plus plate fee or transfer fee around $200-450. Total would be well over $4k.

Ill be the 100% transparent voice of reason.

If you buy this Maverick knowing it will be an unnecessary financial burden that will cause hardship on your family then you are an idiot and need to take a long hard look at your priorities. I say this with love not out of meanness.

It’s not your truck until you sign the papers and you aren't going to make a penny trying to flip it if you do buy it, walk away and spare your family.

Don't go broke over a depreciating asset.
A car, any car, every car, especially a new car is a 100% crappy investment. Your loan period probably shouldn't be more than 36 months. If you have to finance it for longer, you probably shouldn't buy it (there are exceptions, but as a rule...). I love my Mav and think everybody in the world should own one, but it sounds like the OP isn't quite ready for the debt load.
