I am trying to figure out what EZ-pass to get but the selection process for VA EZ-pass is not straight forward.
And when I called them the person I spoke with had less of a clue than I did.

I was able to find this chart. And I believe the Maverick with a single axle trailer should be class 76 but there it could also be class 204(depending if the Mav fits the definition of pickup truck according to DOT).

Once maybe twice a year I will be towing a single axle trailer from VA to Maine and back. The rest of the time it will only be two axles.

  • Do I get myself two EZ-Pass a Flex when not towing and another for towing?
  • Does it matter in any practical way the difference between class 76 and 204
    • do tolls charge different
    • is there an off chance I'll get a ticket for having the wrong one

Don't over think it. You have a 2 axle 4 tire truck under 7,000 lbs. That is code 520.

Don't worry about your single axle trailer. I have been hauling a single axle trailer for years with no issues.

This probably doesn't help, but when I towed a single-axle trailer with my Maverick, it automatically changes to the medium-truck rate. Otherwise, I pay the normal passenger vehicle rate.

VA EZPass holder here, too. I registered the trailer license number with the regular (non-flex) VA EZPass on the web site as one of my vehicles. Never had a problem, never had them misread the EZPass RFID tag or miss the fact the trailer was behind me.

There's a phone number you can call on the reference chart. I find with this stuff it's best to have them tell you so if there's a problem, it's on them. If you can contact in writing, that'd be even better so you can keep a copy in the event they change something later.

In my experience towing with the EZpass is that they figure it out when you have the trailer on vs not. My bill shows 3 axles when I am towing, and 2 axles when I am not. My EZpass is a standard car version.

In Texas the toll tag id's which account is to be charged and the monitor on the road determines the amount for the vehicle plus number of axles involved = 2,3,4,5,? The license plate ties the account number to vehicle if the RFID scanner is down then the plate scanned by camera will be used. This is one of the reasons we keep our plates of our vehicles when we sell them. We prevent the tolls from being charged to our Account!

Yeah, I called them twice. They knew less than I did. Second call after getting with a supervisor they changed my order without me asking but couldnt tell me why 204 was correct and not 76. Or if there was an real difference. 204 is for a truck 3 axles,6 wheels, under 7000lbs l. 76 is for an auto/suv/(depending where you look a pickup) 3 l axles, 6 wheels under 7000lbs.

If they could tell me it doesnt matter, and wheel, axles, and weight are all that matter i would be fine but they had no idea, yet insisted they were right.

Ugh!!! These kind of shenanigans drive me nuts!

I don't care what the rules are; I'll follow them. I only insist that they not be arbitrary and subjective. Sheesh.

Sorry for your pain.

Dude. You are 202.

For sure.

Your "trailer" is not permanently attached right?

You are for sure a pickup truck.
You are over thinking this.
You go by the permanent equipment.

Don't believe me?
Ask someone else on your street.

In Texas, our "EZ Tag" system doesn't care about occasional trailer use. Just get an EZ-Tag for your car or truck as is. They will know it is two axle. They also will know when it crosses the toll booth with 3 axles. NOT something to worry over. I don't think it picks up the flat towed vehicle behind my motorhome all the time......

Hey, I know I am overthinking it but that's because I can't find a straight answer anywhere. Not online, not on here, Not EZ-pass customer service. I have gotten at least 7 different answers. I hear it doesn't matter, I hear if you have it wrong some states or roads will send you a fine, and then people disagree on classification if they even know about them.

As I said:

Ask someone on your street, in your city or county. Your situation is not unique and has a definitive answer.

PS Why in the world all the categories anyhow? What's the point?

California has like three.
