Manufacturing takes place in other countries for only one reason, it’s cheaper to make them elsewhere. Factories don’t just spring up. It takes years to get a plant to be built and start putting out product. It’s also going to make the cost of everything manufactured in the US more expensive. We will see if Americans can stomach the cost of everything going up. Also remember that manufacturing is not the same as it was 30 years ago. Almost all manufacturing is done robotically to increase production and save money by not hiring humans.
Seems like someone posted that it takes the ice assembly robot 22 minutes to assemble either the 2.5 or the 2.0 I don't remember which one. FYI I had my stock 390 CCA warranty replaced in Nov 24 with the Max series 470 CCA which is apparently the go to replacement currently. When I got home with 35 miles on that new battery I put my noco g5 maintainer on the jump posts which took almost 3 days for it to finish the 100% charge AND the Optimization routines. I left the truck locked during that time so it could see the battery with 100%. On Jan 6, 25 truck was side swiped (driver's rear quarter panel = $12722.49 repair + $2141.00 check for diminished value) so went 5 weeks in body shop. When got truck back put noco onto jump pins, locked truck 3 days. In AM the accessory mode with monitor in dash power point shows with lights turned off 12.2-12.4 so add 0.1 to adjust for dash and dome light draw. The Max series is not an AGM but according to specs is framed plates and has gel so I assume has a higher specific gravity than a straight flooded battery. The max series has a three year free replacement instead of the 2 of the standard series. Also has a longer prorated period after the three years. In any case I will use my noco every three or four months.

Proximity to markets and component supply chains are also major factors, but you're definitely right that increased automation = fewer actual jobs. There's no chance auto manufacturers are going to spend billions of dollars reshoring production of ICE vehicles when there is no certainty on long term policies, and definitely lot low margin economy vehicles that are desperately needed now. Every vehicle you can still buy under $25k is in the crosshairs, and the only pickup under $30k.
There is more to having manufacturing capacity in the US than jobs. If the US ever gets involved in a protracted war, we will need to quickly replace our destroyed war machines and it wont matter if they are built by humans or robots. If we have no manufacturing, then we cannot politically stand up to the countries that do have it.

Excerpt:
WASHINGTON (AP) — President Donald Trump on Wednesday will announce tariffs on auto imports, a move that the White House claims would foster domestic manufacturing but that could also put a financial squeeze on automakers that depend on global supply chains.

White House press secretary Karoline Leavitt said the tariffs would be detailed at a 4 p.m. EST news conference. Leavitt said that she would leave it to the Republican president to flesh out his plans to tax foreign-made autos and parts, which could be complicated as even U.S. automakers source their components from around the world.

Shares in General Motors have fallen roughly 1.7% in Wednesday afternoon trading. Ford’s stock was down roughly 1.5%.

You guys are slacking. What ever happened to starting a whole new thread every time there was the slightest hint of a news update? :D
I almost did. I searched for existing tariff topics, and it was hard to find one that wasn't locked!
