Trump is running a "Pump and Dump" scheme. Tariffs are threatened/implemented > market goes down > he and his cronies buy up the discounted stocks. Then low and behold, the tariffs are delayed/repealed! The market rebounds, and they sell the same stocks at a profit. Rinse and repeat. Tariffs make absolutely no sense otherwise.
"... make absolutely not sense..." Agreed. I'm just glad I'm not a small farmer trying to decide whether to lease or purchase a $250k piece of farm equipment for the new season. That decision makes the purchase or lease of a $30k Mav small potatoes.

I have whiplash from trying to follow the on-again, off-again, postponed-again tariff fiasco.

Not so hard to follow...the big 3 contacted white house on Wednesday to get a 30-60 day reprieve as negotiations proceed. Trump agreed...northern border states especially, like mine, know exactly the fees we are forced to pay Canada for farm products, fuel, ect...

All I was trying to say is that you won't see a line-item called "Tarrif" on a new vehicle window sticker or invoice. It does not work that way. Japanese cars have been subjected to US tarrifs forever. Have you ever seen that on a window sticker? I have not. And it better not show up as a "tax" or whatever you want to call it on a dealer's invoice. They don't collect the tarrif. If they are trying to get extra money from you that way, it is called fraud. The price of goods will reflect the tarrifs. How much of the tarrif gets passed onto the customer is up to the manufacturer/importer, not the retailer/dealer. Many auto makers have already stated that 100% of the tarrifs will not be passed on to the customer.
If it showed up as a tax the folks that itemize could at least deduct it. Do you think the administration will give a tax deduction for having to pay tariffs? I guess that would defeat the purpose of giving the feds more of our money!

Gotta love all the chaos. Really inspires consumer confidence, especially when one is contemplating a $30-$40k purchase.
Or even buying food.

no question prices will rise, but it's impossible to guess what percent. sales will fall off a cliff if it were to be the full 25%, which is kind of the point of a tariff. to reduce economic activity and create a reason for a trade agreement.
Tariff is not on the total cost of the Maverick, only the parts purchased or made in Mexico. Not the Ford made parts that were shipped to Mexico. The part of the tariff deal that upsets Canada and Mexico is they both signed a "North American Trade Agreement" in 2018 with that US President (also the current one) and he has broken that trade agreement with these new tariffs.

The tariff on the Maverick will probably be in the $2,800 range...(Putting mine at around $42,000 for an XLT) and I don't think the Maverick is a $42,000 truck.

Unless it has changed - Tariffs are applied at the time the vehicle crossed the border. And is reported by the US Customs Department's copy of the bill of sale..

(Putting mine at around $42,000 for an XLT) and that would be more than I feel it is worth.
in the near term the result would be used *hybrid* maverick prices spiking. they obviously can't rise all the way to the cost of the new + tariff amount, but they can rise. the hybrid maverick remains highly differentiated from other trucks (because it's a fuel economy-focused hybrid) and hybrid sedans / suvs (because it has a bed).

the ecoboost would be harmed a lot more. consumers would find something else to buy, whether new or used, it would be a truck without a tariff most likely.

RE: North American Free Trade Agreement - Yes, you mean the one touted in 2018 as the best-ever trade agreement Americans have ever seen and the world has ever know? And now its not worth the paper it was written on.

I am not agreeing or disagreeing with the premise, but...

A nebulous threat of possible, maybe future tariffs doesn't inspire action. 25% tariffs starting today does.

I can guarantee there are Ford executives and manufacturing engineers visiting shuttered US factories today and devising a plan to move MAV/BS production back to the US. If ,or when, it happens will depend on the costs and time to get the facilities and workforce ready vs the cost of stopping production completely vs absorbing the 25% somehow.

I foresee Ford "promising" to assemble the next gen MAV in the US and the MAV tariff being delayed until then. DJT will be out of office by then and they can renegotiate with the next guy.

Order now and pay for vehicle in full at the time of placing the order - this should lock in the price no matter what happens.
Hmmm???
In 1961 I purchased a brand new $2450 MSRP six slant cylinder Plymouth for just under $900 (walked out 3 times, last time had rear wheels almost into the street when sales manager came out door and waved me and Daddy back). Paid cash!!! on Saturday afternoon AND TOOK IMMEDIATE POSSESSION. Could hardly believe deal. Dad said "impossible deal we struck!". Then on TUESDAY AM The newspaper headline was "XYZ DEALERSHIP FILES BANKRUPTCY!!!". Fortunately I had bill of sale and car in homestead driveway!!!! If you pay in full at time of order have bond or 3rd party hold $$ until delivery or failure to delivery date.

Had a Hybrid AWD XLT on order at a firm price quote and deposit. Dealer emailed me this AM and price will go up $3,800 so I asked for my deposit back...I was not desperate for the XLT. If I do not get my deposit back quickly, I will be PO'ed.
dealer likely found someone who will be more than happy to pay your 'firm price' +$1000 or something, knowing you'd likely back out. They have no idea what Ford would do if the tariffs occur - Ford might eat the cost for vehicles already ordered taking whatever loss is involved since they don't seem to mind losing 10s of Billion$ on their EV line....

It's also not a $39,200 truck, it is what it was intended - a mid $20s truck, people can dress them up any way they want, but it's not the extra $2800 (6.5 percent) that changes the value proposition of it, it's the $14k (50 % ) in upgrades that makes it that though of course the added $2800 doesn't help...

All good points it’s up to each of us to do our own due diligence and protect our consumer rights so many just accept whats presented

Buyers beware - dealers will try to milk the uncertainty by throwing out prices to shoppers based on the proposed tariff increases even if there is a postponement. It will be like the ADM - additional dealer markups - all over again when Mavs first came out in 2022.

This tariff thing is like the Soup du jour at the diner. I hear it changes every day.

Quote of the moment: "The word 'tariff', the most beautiful word in the English language. And they are going to pay for it".

That could possibly be interpreted as political.
But for the life of me I can't tell which way. There's the obvious, but then there's how I write that makes me wonder.
