Hi forums friends,

I've scoured around and have been unable to find what type of Motorcraft transmission fluid is in our Mavericks. I have a case of Mercon LV from when I had my F-150 and was unsure if it's compatible or not. Any insight + reference is greatly appreciated. Thanks for the assist!

Mercon LV is a little thicker than Mercon ULV, about the only difference.
LV can be used. Amsoil has tried their LV-equivalent-viscosity ATF fluid in the Mav's 8F35, and, not surprisingly it works fine. reference https://www.amsoil.com/lookup/auto-...averick/2-0l-4-cyl-engine-code-9-999-9-turbo/

Basically, the difference in viscosity between an LV vs. ULV atf is about 15 degrees F. Hydrodynamically, a ULV at 180F is the same viscosity as an LV at 195F, & transmissions perform well (durability) at either temperature.

Fuel economy gains via reduced transmission viscous friction losses using a ULV are about 0.3 MPG.
