So I live on a dirt road. Sometimes big rocks get plowed up or kicked up into the road. If you don't see them and run over them you may get a flat tire. I will stop and pick them up and throw them off the side of the road. I was in the wife's Mav the other day and saw one as I went by, size of a softball. As I always have done for 24 years out here I began to back up and opened the door to look down so I could grab it from the seat and never step out. Slow roll of course.

Big mistake as the truck threw itself into park while I was moving and opening/leaning out the door when I took the seatbelt off. It made a clicking sound for a couple of feet and then stopped fully and I realized what it had done. It does not seem to have hurt it but good lord what an eye opener. Will not repeat again in this thing. Do not open door while moving and take off the seatbelt

@Steve Urquell leave your seat belt on and the truck will not shift to park while backing up with the door open.

Is that when it does it? I felt like there was a delay between when I opened the door while moving and it put itself in park. Must have been while I was unbuckling to allow me to lean out. Thanks. Now I can back up in reverse with the door wide open like a total idiot! :D

Thinking about how it happened I recall popping the seatbelt loose and then it happened. I thought I might have flicked the shifter dial when releasing the seatbelt.

The whole thing is kinda weird for me. Probably the vehicle I am most at home driving would be a V8 Jeep CJ5. You could leave it driving, crawl out over the hood, make a repair, jump off pick up the tool you dropped, hustle and catch back up and jump jin the drivers seat without ever actually stopping the vehicle. Hell you can walk and drive em just about anywhere you can keep up. Of course there is always death and dismemberment to think about.

similar to my Escape.... But.... Warning.... Sometimes it may still go into Park even if I have the seat belt on (least on my Escape it does).. Neighbor told me about the belt on allowing you to open the door when he was allowed to back up with the door open on his RAM truck. I need to lean out of the door when backing my 102 wide trailer into the garage so I see where the side of the doors. Hopefully that will not follow me when my Maverick arrives (build date, week of 9/22/24).

Hey, it’s the seatbelt mate. When that thing is clicked in, it sets up all the safety features and when it comes out, the truck goes into danger Will Robinson mode.

I think mine went into park when I popped the seatbelt loose.

Thanks. That's what @MM Mav said in post #2. I edited the OP for accuracy.

So leave the seat belt buckled and sit on it.

I can see We are going to have a lot to learn, The new Maverick is our first NEW vehicle in quite some time, boy have things changed :)

So much for those adventure movies where the protagonist leaps from a moving vehicle that, now driverless, safely carries the bomb into the heart of the villain's lair. We now have to hack his central computer instead.

On the other end of this feature, it may actually be useful. Say if you are filming a action sequence just have your belt off and come to a near stop and simply hop out and spin around and shoot the bad guy. Could look pretty sweet. Im sure its actually a feature they add to stunt cars. Old movies probably had a midget on the floorboard jamming the break pedal.

FYI Hybrids do this too.

It's a combination of conditions met:

Door Open
Seatbelt not connected
Truck rolling less than 6 mph

Goes into park.

Sucks when you are moving the truck a few feet- looking for pavement markings, moving rocks, moving orange cones, looking for lost contact lens, dropped widget.... the list is endless.

So I defeated the tranny nanny today. I stopped on my dirt road to pick up a big rock and chuck it off the road.

Seatbelt was off. Opened the door and the truck went into park. I put it back into drive and moved fwd. Door was open and seatbelt off.

Tried it in reverse. Door open, seatbelt off. It went into park and set the E-brake. I put it in reverse and released the brake. Drove in reverse with door open and seatbelt off.
