Love that. I think for security it doesn’t get much better than that. What was the cost?

Just my 2 cents on making the covers less venerable. Add a think layer of weatherstripping to the rails. I used a 3/16 x 1 1/4" camper shell seal and it squeezed the rails together close enough to prevent any sideways movement. if the latches have too little material to hook to, They were really easy to pop up and this prevented it. I ended up using it on the back of the bed too b/c those small bumps in the corners prevented the rails from sitting flush.

I never even knew a product like that existed. That's likely overkill for most people but it's still a good option to have for those that need that level of security.

Hey there everyone,

Like many folks on here, I’m trying to locate the best tonneau cover for both affordability and quality. I keep going back and forth between every style there is, trying to keep it sub $500. Security is one theme that keeps coming to mind, which the answer would be a hard top.

My question is, has anyone or do you guys know anyone who has actually had a tonneau cover broken into, and I mean like a soft top being deliberately cut so someone could get into it. I feel like this is not a common occurrence, possible yes, but not common. That is the one drawback I’m facing when choosing a cover but I want to know how often bad guys are actually cutting into these things.

Love to here everyone’s thoughts or experiences.
Just generally speaking what are you storing in the bed? I only ask because for the most part when cars or trucks are broken into it's almost always because something was left in plain site or the car was unlocked. It's rare for thieves to just go breaking windows and cutting tonneou covers. Usually they either see something inside the vehicle in plain site or they target vehicles that are left unlocked. In most cases any tonneau cover will do because you're keeping the contents in the truck bed hidden. That doesn't mean it would never get broken into but it is not common.
Now, of course if you're storing $10,000 worth of say tools in there then you probably want to increase your tonneau cover budget anyway just to be safe. But if you're storing a few everyday items then you likely will never have an issue.

Totally agree with you. And I wouldn’t be storing anything of great value in the bed either. Could be my kid’s backpack while I stop somewhere, or groceries, maybe luggage, but knowing I have something like that in my bed, I understand it wouldn’t be ideal to stop somewhere and leave the truck out of sight.

Just from browsing this forum for general discussions around which tonneau is best or what people have to say about a specific brand/type, the topic of security constantly comes up, which got me thinking, “Are people really breaking into these things and if so how often?”. So, it sounds like the answer is probably not that often. I can only really afford a soft trifold at the moment, and that’s why I was looking for feedback around this topic.

The Diamondback is pricey at $1849 but I often have equipment in the bed that is expensive so that's why I went with that option.

That is all you can ask for. Mine is parked in my driveway so I would hear it right away. Someone already tried to get to my Converter but they were a little noisy and I heard them and scared them off. They were banging on the bottom of the truck trying to figure out what the hybrid underbody covers were all about that was limiting their access to the underbody. Scared them off.....4 young teenagers.
Hey Phil, it's not to be. The soft foldable tonneau has no attachment points. Two days ago, I got BBS SX (the cheaper BBS) wheels installed. They are gorgeous. So, now I can worry about THEIR being stolen rather than the tonneau being broken into. My ulcer could not survive if I didn't have SOMETHING to worry about. I love the wheels. I was happy with the steel wheels, but there is another Maverick in town with upgraded wheels and it looked like a different vehicle than mine.

I went through a similar experience when I got my truck earlier this summer. I ended up going with a tri-fold hard cover that I found on ebay. When I bought it, it was less than $500 and so far, has been well worth it. I don't leave much in there, but wanted something more secure than a soft cover. It does leak a little at the corners or folds when it really rains, or if I go through the car wash with it. But, it's secure and won't open if the tailgate is locked. My kid can stand on it with no issues. And, we ski/ride in the winter, and I'll have no concerns leaving our gear in there with the truck locked.

Where did you get it for a little over $500? Ford has it over $1000, even after 15% off.

You're paying good money for your truck. Buy a hard tonneau is my opinion. I'd never go with soft one.
