I'm looking into retractable ones, but they cost as much as lower end camper shells ($1.5-2K).

How much weight can the factory installed tri fold or the roll up cover hold?

Is a hard one worth 2x the price?
I've had the hardtops on 3 f150s and 2 came with the trucks. The first one I bought and it did keep the bed dry but was a pain if you had anything taller than 3-4 feet. I had a soft top and it served me well. I currently have a retracting hardtop on my RAM. I love it as you can put over 500lbs on the top if necessary. I have a trifold soft top awaiting my Maverick in my garage. It is an added security item for me as well as weather protection for groceries.

Go factory, they are good quality and look nice plus covered by factory warranty. I went with the hard roll up.
I would not use factory as it has just a 3 year warranty and is overprice. I am waiting for the BAK Indutries hard fold MX4 which should be available by the end of Feb. It is the most popular hard folding on the market and has a 5 year warranty. They also manufacture a hard rolling model.

Wonderinf what's more durable... Hard tri-fold oe Hard Roll up?
In high heat areas the hard folding MX4 is king as the top slats are powder painted aluminum vs a hard folding with a vinyl (it has to roll) over the aluminum slats.

MX4 is 400 pounds evenly distributed

I ordered a hard top, tri fold. I didn't want a roll up one and definitely not a soft one. I like the fact that I can lock this hard top one. Can you lock the soft ones? Just curious.

I've had an aftermarket one in a truck I had before. LOVED IT! Matched the truck color and was lockable. It went pretty high up, never really had an issue with that. Only had it taken off once and that was because I was getting a load of dirt dumped into it. I do know I called around when the Maverick was announced and was told it would probably be 2 years before an aftermarket one is made.

I didn't want to wait for the BAK. I went with the Undercover Ultra Flex tri fold. Installed easy and works well. A little water in the corners from the car wash. No water driving in medium rain for an hour or so at 60 mph.
