I just received word that our Maverick Lariat on order is being shipped so I went into the dealer to discuss a possible trade. At the time of order, they said they wouldn’t appraise my vehicle until we got closer to the delivery date. So here we are, just about to receive delivery, and the dealer now advises they’re not interested in taking my existing truck in trade. What to do?

I sold my 22 to Carmax. Got a fair price for it. Easy.

Give Carmax a try. It takes a few minutes, and the offer is valid for a week. That gives you some time to think about it. Have sold my Grand Cherokee to them a few years ago. Got about $ 2500.00 more than VW offered me as a trade in. Good luck.

Get some quotes from other dealers for purchase of the vehicle. Especially if it's non-Ford, you may get a better offer from a dealer of that make. Compare to what the trade offer would be at delivery. Remember to net out the sales tax. The trade offer may be lower, but a better deal after factoring in the lower tax on the net sale price.

Edit: Always bring a calculator when making the purchase and check the dealer math. I saved a couple hundred dollars because I found errors in their math.

I got a good deal and was treated fairly at Carmax. YMMV

To be clearer, the dealer never looked at the 2023... clear title, no accidents, low mileage, still under OEM warranty, one owner, no lien. Sight unseen they opted out of even appraising it. I've listed online under book for over a month, lookers but no takers. CarMax beat Carvana by $200 but CarMax is a longer distance where it would take two cars two hours to deliver it and my time is money also. Carvana is here and worth $200 not to travel. But still taking a bath...it feels like bait and switch.

If they knew what your trade-in is and just left you hanging, that's pretty shitty behavior on the dealer's part IMO

They should have told you upfront that they weren't interested, that would've given you more time to sell it on your own

It isn't "bait and switch" per se, but it feels disrespectful

Are there any other trucks similar to your order in the area? I wouldn't feel any remorse backing out of the deal in those circumstances

They don't want to waste time on a "maybe". The day you're talking with Ford about buying your truck is when they care about any tradein.

Agree get quotes to know what you could get, to talk with Ford.

CarMax won't give you the best price but they're reputable, and super easy to deal with.

It will take 4-6 weeks (possibly longer) for you to receive the Maverick Lariat. Mine was shipped to Tampa on 3/17/25 and did not arrive here until yesterday.

I sold my 2009 Tacoma on Craigs List. I purchased it new for $21,000 and sold it for $10,750 with 113,000 miles on it. I had all the paperwork, was very honest with the buyer and pointed out this was a great truck for a kid going to college in the fall. If you sell it yourself, treat the buyer the same way you would want to be treated. It worked for me.

🤓 I think I would go to another dealership, if there’s no money down on the other truck.
