Ive gotten different stories on what exactly this $40 option is. I ordered an XL. Does this give my tailgate a power lock/un- lock function like the power doors? What exactly is it? Is a power tailgate lock possible on XL trim? Thanks

Nothing to do with power. It's a physical lock to make it harder to steak your tailgate

No, it's to prevent your tailgate from getting stolen.

It’s a locking band that goes around the tailgate hinge to prevent the tailgate from being lifted out of the slotted hinge socket. Aftermarket versions usually range in the $15-25 price range.

Yeah. Tailgates are very expensive now with electronics in them

Yes. Easiest way is to lock the tailgate (manually on xl, with the door locks on xlt, lariat). The tailgate needs to be lowered to remove, so if it is locked, it is safe.

I am assuming an XLT with lux does not require this lock due to the locking tailgate.

Yep, bigtime problem, just google tailgate theft. Houston's always been a hotspot for them. From an article a couple years back:

The suspects only needed 14 seconds in order to steal the truck tailgate. Unfortunately, this wasn't the first time.
Cruz said two months ago, in the middle of the night, someone targeted his tailgate.
"We work hard to have our own things, and for somebody else to do these kinds of things, it doesn't feel right," Cruz said.
Deputies haven't made an arrest. They believe the suspect in the most recent theft was driving a Mitsubishi.
Houston police said in 2017 and 2018 they had about 1,300 reported truck tailgate thefts.
The majority of those thefts, officers say, involved a tailgate with a backup camera.
To protect your tailgate, buy a lock, and arm your security system. You don't have to spend money.
Another option is backing the truck closely against your house, garage, or another vehicle. It's advice Cruz plans to take so hopefully he won't watch his $7,000 part vanish again.
Deputies also recommend writing the last four digits of your social security number on the tailgate, so if it is recovered, they can return it.

People will steal anything that is not tied down, even if they have no use for it. The tailgate that is retained only by the latch, without a key lock or a power lock, can be removed on Ford trucks by opening the tailgate, disconnecting the support cables, and tilting the lock to ~45 degrees. The right end hinge will line up, and allow that end to be lifted off the hinge pin, unless you have a 'band lock' around the hinge. A power lock, as in the XLT, may prevent removal IF it does not allow manually unlatching the tailgate. I don't know if that is the case.

You must not realize how easy lock-picking is. I do it as a hobby and it scares me sometimes. It's all about layers of protection. If someone has enough time and/or willpower, they will get it anyway. This is to slow down or discourage the slightly honest or mostly scared folks.
