Anybody know what this looks like? Does it take a key?

Seems strange that its an option ($40) and not standard. Why would you not want this?

Thanks

I didn't look at the picture too in-depth, but there is one on the Ford parts/accessories website.

I don't think it had a key, it was inserted/attached to a bar along the lower right side of the gate (visible only when the gate is open maybe). I didn't get the impression it was something that has a key, maybe something that is just to prevent it from being removed.

It's a glorified hose clamp that goes around the slotted tailgate hinge. Instead of a usual hex head it has a patterned cut like a wheel lock so it requires a corresponding socket to remove.

If all you want to do is to discourage a casual tailgate taker, then why not use a screw-type hose clamp. Loosening the clamp will take some time instead of allowing a quick grab. It also requires a tool for removal, and that may be unexpected, again discouraging theft.
If you have the XLT power locks, the tailgate will be locked when the doors are locked, which should slow down takers. tom

As noted, it is just a hose clamp. Some of them have a rubber skin on them and a special socket like this (if you undo it, you see it is just a hose clamp with a rubber outer layer to prevent scratching):

There are other brands, and some local parts stores have them, too. Usually for about $20 or so. Its far cheaper to just use a hose clamp, but some like the 'key' method instead of something that can be removed using a regular screwdriver. But that reminds me to add this disclaimer: No matter what you use, its not 100% guaranteed. Someone determined enough will get through even the best methods. :)

Wow, lots of helpful replies!

Does Ford supply the “key” with there part?

Thanks

Just keep the tailgate locked and there is no need for this. FYI the xlt and lariat are locked with the doors, xl has to be manually locked.

Yes, they do.
Thanks for all the info everybody.

I believe this item will be removed from my order. I don't need any extra small things (i.e. the "key") to keep track off.

Your caps lock key is stuck. Might want to take that in and have it fixed.
