I was reading through what comes with the MY23's on the Ford build your truck page. It says you get 2 pigtail's with a MY23.

With less weight, does gas mileage improve a little bit? How about if it is just in the down position? See a fair amount of guys with pick-ups who drive around with tailgate down and nothing in the bed.
I also see a fair amount of tailgates with the top rail dented because the owner forgot the tailgate was down when he backed up.

I think that would be hard to do with a modern truck, including the Maverick, with backup cams. You'll immediately know it's down when you see the camera pointed at the ground

Good point! Did not occur to me. But I'm old and moderately out of touch!

Back in the 70s when the whole tailgate down saved you a bunch of money on gas milage thing came out lots of folks removed the tailgate altogether. Nets became popular.
Several years later you would see trucks with the fenders bowed out or worse in more serious cases.
The tailgate performs a job to help keep the tied together structurally at the rear of the truck bed.
It's ok to remove or leave down occasionally but I would not make a practice of it.
