Tail gate

This has happened to me twice in a manner of 10 days. I go to open my tailgate and it’s locked, and I have not locked it on myself. No key used. Any bells have this happen?

Not sure if its trim specific but on my lariat, when the doors are locked the tailgate also gets locked buy design.

On my XLT you need to use the fob or interior switches to unlock ALL doors - i.e. click TWICE for the tailgate to unlock. Conceptually, the tailgate is sortof lumped in with passenger/rear doors in terms of locking/unlocking. I would suppose that translates to Lariats for the most part.

There is a setting that controls whether it takes two clicks or just one click on the fob to unlock all doors. I have mine set to unlock only the driver's door, as explained above. The equivalent setting on Lariats may also control what unlocks when you grab the driver's door handle with the fob in your pocket etc.

Since there is no separate button to operate the power tailgate lock I imagine it's being operated as if it were a hatchback door or trunk lid so that if you press the lock button on the door it will lock everything, and if you use the fob to lock all the doors it will include the tailgate.
I'm pretty sure that the "auto lock" feature that locks the doors when you begin driving also locks the tailgate. So therefore if you unlock the doors and tailgate to access the bed then get in and drive away the tailgate will lock and stay locked until you use either the button on your drivers door or the fob to unlock it.

I've never noticed if the setting that unlocks all doors upon exit unlocks the tailgate

I learned one more thing about my Maverick. Yes, the tailgate locks when you lock the doors and it unlocks when you unlock the doors.

Except for the XL trim. Tailgate lock is manual with the key. Or just have a German Shepard stand guard.

The dog in the bed wouldn’t work for me, I have a chocolate lab. All he would do is lick them to death.

I have a 24 XLT and the tailgate locks with the back doors. I programmed the fobs to lock/unlock all doors with one push, including the TG. I don't know what other trim levels do. I do not have a bed cover so locking the TG might prevent it from being stolen.
