Sync 3 w/Navigation, who pays?

OK, so I'm a COF (Cheap Old Fart), but having taken delivery of my '24 Lariat yesterday, I have to ask; is my cell phone providing the data link for the navigation system, or are map updates uploaded when a WiFi signal is available? I currently only have a 1gb/month usage plan, does Ford assume that everyone has an unlimited data plan to support this feature?

You can go to the My Ford page enter in your vin and you can download sync and nav updates onto a usb and install at your leisure. No phone necessary

Nipper partially answered your questions, but I'll finish it out.

The factory navigation does not update on its own. The maps will get stale. Factory nav does not have live traffic data like you would get in Google Maps or Waze because it does not read that info live via your smartphone like Google Maps does.

You have free map updates for 3 years. You will need a USB stick at least 8GB to do the updates for Sync3 and maps. Login to Ford's site, make sure your truck is there (add the VIN if not) then go into the garage and get into the updates. Basically you will download some files to your computer, copy to a USB key, insert it and start the truck. It'll update automatically. Let it restart at least once with the key installed. After it's done, shut off the ignition and remove the USB device.

Well you can't be a real cheap old fart if you bought a '24 Lariat .

no phone needed at all like Garmin etal, all maps are pre loaded.

The website does say you need a 16-32GB USB for it but the instructions say 8GB

I find this to be the most reliable way for the updates.

*Edit, just checked mine and it was less than 1GB

And just in case you are also asking if you are using your cell phone data plan while driving around using the built in navigation system that is part of Sync 3, the answer is no. I couldn’t tell for sure if that was part of your question or not.
