Switchblade Key Sticks When Unfolding

Not sure if there are multiple key styles based on trim level, but I have the four-button “switchblade” style key for my XLT. I find the blade often sticks when I try to open it: the release button depresses fine, but the key itself binds. Tried (lightly) spraying the pivot point with some silicone, but no improvement. Anyone else notice this?

I believe they are spring loaded, and the spring eventually wears out, there are youtube videos showing how to repair them.

Possible I just got a bad spring, but my truck is a ‘24 with 7k on it. So I don’t see how it could be worn out.

you bet. I have a rather expensive name brand auto open knife that needs a blast of air now and then

I had this problem on my 21 Ranger. Took me a while to figure it out. The pin that holds the actual key to the spring loaded hinge works its way out so that it sticks in the closed position. I simply push the pin back in with a nail or squeeze it back in with a pair of pliers.

It's under warranty. Take it to a dealer.

Ford knew this design was suspicious to begin with. The key has a built in “hook” that is positioned so a finger nail can open the key.

Pocket lint is bad. I take my constant companion apart every 4 to 5 weeks to make sure the build up isn't too bad. I want to make sure there is never a problem.

My keys don't open when the button is depressed...I have to do it myself.
