Imagine a world where you actually had to know how to drive before getting a license…

Say what you want about state DMVs, but back in my day driving inspectors were very strict and failure rates were high. Today just about anyone gets a license so they can avoid testing backlogs.

...Pull in, find a parking spot away from everyone, ...
Might want to recalibrate "away from everyone".... 5 or 10 open spots? Nope. You need BFE far corner, calibrate by acres. 🤠

(Short) Side Bar Rant: Why are 80% of all Toyota drivers complete F'ing morons behind the wheel?? Make that 90% for Prius & Sienna models. It's literally unbelievable. Partly why I have not, nor will ever, consider buying a Toyota.

**End of rant** 👹

You should never be shy about leaning on the horn because you can never underestimate the power of human inattention and stupidity. My wife had someone back up into her car - the woman never looked behind her because "she was in a hurry".

Watched my brother drive straight into a high curb and trash his bumper all while I'm yelling "STOP STOP STOP STOP STOP". For some reason he didn't think I was talking about him.

Watched a dude stopped at a red light let his vehicle roll backward and hit the car behind him. He gets out of the car clearly very angry thinking the guy behind ran into him, his face a mask of rage until he sees that it was a cop. The cop was not amused. 😂

On second thought, it probably won't actually stop the idiots but it might make you feel like you tried. 😭

The lesson I'm learning from this thread, is that the farther away you park, the more likely an idiot doesn't see your vehicle!

For all of you out there whose Mavericks have been damaged a year or less into ownership, this post is for you.

Let me set the scene for you:

It's Friday night, just got home from work. It's the weekend, and I'm also stoked for Friday next week: Heading out to the Ocala National Forest for our virgin voyage of the cargo trailer camper for some Labor Day Weekend Fun. (Yes! It's mostly built! Pictures upon final completion.) Anyway...

Had a mean craving for pizza and wings, and placed the order on the drive home anticipating the perfect timing at the pizza place. Pull in, find a parking spot away from everyone, take the usual precautions. I exit my truck, get to the end of my rear bumper, and I see...

SOMEONE IN A WHITE TOYOTA SIENNA, BACKING UP AT 30MPH (probably an exaggeration, but you KNOW what I'm talking about) AND COMING STRAIGHT AT THE CORNER/REAR QUARTER OF MY MAVERICK. All of this was happening in slow motion...it might be five years later for all I know...and my brain is processing: "That f'er doesn't even see my truck!" I stood there in shock for what felt like an eternity before I finally yelled out, "YOOOOOO!!!!! What the hell are you doing?!" The dude literally stopped 6" from my bumper, paused for a moment, and then took off.

I walked to the other side of my truck just to make sure no actual contact took place. Everything was safe.

Walked into the pizza place and nearly threw up. Watching all of that happen was just too much to handle. Literally watched my life (and my Maverick's life) flash before my eyes.

Pizza and wings were really good though!
At least you had a happy ending with these events, safe Maverick, plus pizza and wings........win win

How often does a person pull into a parking lot just drive towards the back. Find a spot park. Come out 20 minutes later and someone is right next to you, with 10 empty spots within a 70 ft radius.

Yup. You got lucky.

I had a PennDOT snowplow (yes the big one) back right into me in my old F150. Dude never looked, just stopped, and went into reverse to back through an intersection. BTW, the state is never liable.

That truck of mine was jinxed. When it was only two weeks old, some kid in a lifted jeep hydroplaned next to be on a highway. Hit me three times (front, rear, then door) while pushing be into a guide rail. Replaced or repaired every body panel on it.

If that wasn't enough... Two weeks after getting it back from wreck #1; I had it at scout camp. I had parked way off in the far corner of the lot. Sure enough, some young driver backed straight into it.

Then there was this mom teaching her 14year old how to drive. They were stopped at a stop sign. I went through the intersection (I didn't have a stop) and the kid assumed everyone stops and drove straight into my right side.

Oh yeah, my dad was following me through Knoxville one day. I was watching in my rearview mirror as someone came flying up an on ramp into the highway -- and into the right rear corner of my truck. In the mirror I could see the whole truck lift up and spin. Luckily, dad was unhurt.

I wish I could make this stuff up. I can't. As you said, just SLOOOOW motion memories that continually haunt.
That truck is past “jinxed” and into “cursed” territory. Did you try putting it on a lift and checking for pentagrams painted on the underside?

Something like this kinda happened to me recently, but with our explorer, which is our baby as much as our maverick is. I like to park away from other people if I can help it for obvious reasons, so I park our explorer literally hundreds of feet away from any other car. As I'm walking to the store, I hear a rumble behind me.

Turn around, and it's a '68 gray charger. Being the car guy I am, I'm thinking cool car. Then they start ripping donuts and drifting around concrete islands in the parking lot. Doing a few donuts around one, then driving to another, each time they do, they're getting closer and closer to Diamond, our explorer. I'm like, these idiots are going dare each other to drift around my lone car and slam into it or something, so I threw my hand up at them.

The driver, who looked like a greasier, sleazier Finn Wolfhard says "What's up?" Clearly annoyed, to which I respond "You're gonna hurt someone doing this in the middle of the day, there are people walking around" which was true. He gets pissed and says "Why don't you take down my plates asshole?" Sarcastically, and speeds off.

Then a few days ago, my uncle's 2007 focus with 280k on it had the fan belt go out, so we drove out to help him in the middle of the night, parking out maverick in a nearby Taco Bell parking lot. Then, as we're working on it, I see a bunch of cars roll up from a small car meet right next to it. They were drifting and peeling up flying by it, and I was just like "Fantastic".

I love cars to death, but as I start to near the end of my 20s, I really am starting to hate a lot of people in the car scene. The kinds that instead of just chilling out and cruising, have to race through a residential neighborhood in the middle of the night, or do 150 mph flybys in traffic. When you're young and immature, you think it's cool, when you grow up, you realize those people are just assholes.

Holy shit dude, I don't know if any of you watch Matt Maran Motoring on YouTube, highly recommend him, but that's the experience he had with his s550 mustangs for awhile. He got a mustang gt, and when it was less than a week old I want to saw, they came around a blind corner and hit a biker going the opposite direction, he was fine. This caved in the left hand side of the car. Then he repaired it, and a tree fell on the roof as he was driving under it, caving it in. So he was like nah, I'm selling this thing.

I remember when emissions inspections were still a thing in FL. Lived up in NY (northwest NY/Rochester area, not the asshole downstate City part) and they had VERY strict vehicle inspections.

I'm beginning to think that anyone over 65 should have yearly driving tests for reflexes, etc. I'm pretty sure the driver of the Sienna was a little old guy, although to be perfectly honest I never really saw the driver. I was watching the horror unfold.

I was not in my truck when this happened. No horn.
