I guess the real test is coming this weekend for those living in the east coast with your slippery mode.

North Texas has been iced over the past couple days. To all the northerners who make fun of us Texans and our shutdowns during winter: 1. We don't normally get snow, we get ice. Snow is easy/fun to drive on. Ice is terrifying. 2. We don't have the infrastructure to help ice days. No plows, no sand trucks, no winter tires.

That said, I did some driving in the iced over roads and I think the FWD Maverick slippery mode is very good. I don't have much experience with various vehicles, so, take it with a grain of salt.

The Maverick engages traction control in a way that I didn't even notice until I watched the display flashing the light. Super smooth acceleration.

That said, the ABS is strange. No pedal feel that I noticed, but crazy clicking when it engages. That said, it's predictable from what I expected a FWD vehicle. Understeer when expected, ABS behaved in a predictable way. ✔

That said, the one thing I wasn't able to do is back up my driveway. Drove up forward and that's fine for today. 👍👍
All ABS brakes pulsate and click in that situation.

I didn't believe any tires could stop on ice until I got my first set of Blizzaks. They actually squeegee the water off the top of the ice which is what makes you slip. I tried them out in an icy parking lot and they stopped the car. Of course you still have the limits of physics so you need to adjust your driving. They also have a soft tread so you don't want to leave them on out of season. Since I have been driving all wheel drive vehicles I just run all seasons now.

When you don't have the infrastructure to treat the roads, or the roads themselves are full of grades and switchbacks as they are in East TN, inexperienced drivers in the south are definitely in a bad situation to learn on the fly. Had I not grown up driving in Ohio and Michigan, I'd probably be stomping on the brakes and sliding around, too.

Tom, I own both versions. You are right, FWD is fine in most of the country. But in the mountains or on a wet boat ramp, the front wheels will have a hard time pulling 3500 lbs up a slippery hill without spinning out. This video shows me on the steepest part of an incline in Park City from a full stop in my turbo AWD.

Oh and with FWD, you have to stop at chain control but the AWD and 4X4 vehicles are let through. I hope this helps.

You are absolutely correct. In my area snow & ice are only an issue for my FWD if I head up to the mountains – maybe once a year.

I have a good buddy who is beginning to have physical issues and is finding it more and more difficult to climb aboard his 4x4 Silverado. He sometimes uses it to haul a boat out of the water, so I recommended the AWD Maverick as a much better pick than the FWD precisely for the reasons you gave. All we need now is an AWD hybrid and we'll see the perfect truck.

Excellent video, by the way! Thank you for your contributions and suggestions. Much appreciated.

sure glad we don't get ice here up north :ROFLMAO:
Ohio is lovely 4" of snow north of 70 and 2" of ice south of 70!

I miss ice and snow sooo bad. All my best driving is in the winter. Never mattered what kind of vehicle I was in I dominated. FWD, RWD, 4x4, van, truck, jeep, sedan, muscle car, box truck, foklift, skid steer, man-lift, class a, bicycle, skis, sled, recycle bin, my own 2 feet(in boots) at 25 mph on ice while hanging onto the bumper of a truck. Didnt matter what I was driving one bit, I never got stuck unintentionally. One time I drove my V8 CJ5 on top of one of those 12ft tall parking lot piles, I sank in the middle! But I dug myself out with my own shovel. Only took a half hour.

Wow thanks Tom for you kind words! I am just a rookie trying to give real driving experiences rather than a test drive in a Maverick the reviewer does not even own. Oh and I do not like how they make you stare at them most of the video. My focus in on the Maverick in my 100 videos to date. I am trying to be different.

I see you are in Cypress not far from me in HB. Maybe we can meet up sometime like at Angel Stadium during baseball season so you can drive my Mav. In the meantime, I hope I earn your sub and referrals.

They have chain control stops in Utah now? When did that start? I worked at Snowbird for 2 winters in the mid 80's and never saw such a thing.

I was driving a 72' Volvo station wagon with snow tires, never got stuck, never thought about chains. Drove (or hitch hiked) up Little Cottonwood canyon every day in 10" of (fluffy) snow at times.

Moved to to LA and first time going skiing at Snow Summit was stopped and had to put chains on to drive on 15 miles of wet road. I guess I was thankfull all the other idiots had to put chains on also.

You are welcome. Much deserved.

Oh, yeah. I see that now. HB! We drive there quite frequently. I'd love to meet up and swap some Maverick stories! I'm going to send you my phone number. No need to wait for baseball season.

Grew up in upstate NY and live here in Texas. I would rather drive in 2 feet of snow than an inch of ice we had. With that being said I owned a Frontier and Tacoma previously and the Maverick handles it better than both of the others for me anyway. Ecoboost XLT AWD with stock pirellis. With sensible driving it was felt glued to the road. If The wheels even slipped I didn’t notice. Cant ask for better than that. The roads here are made of a different pavement compound also I believe to handle the higher heat. They get slick sometimes more than other areas from rain alone it seems also.
