Eco mode on my Ecoboost makes it run like it needs a tune up. I’ve never seen an ounce of fuel savings in Eco.
But then again I get pretty much the same mpg’s when I drive like grandma going to church or like a guy with a turbo. :’P
It’s an Ecoboost thing I guess.
Same with the hybrid. I wasn't paying attention and switched to eco mode the first day I got it . I went to accelerate up a hill and almost regretted my purchase. Then I saw the leaf. Switched it back to normal and was relieved. On the highway at steady speeds it's virtually no difference in fuel economy. But when driving in stop and go traffic or hilly terrain, it can make a few mpg difference because we're creatures of habit and tend to press the accelerator the same amount unless we're actively trying to accelerate faster or slower. I noticed that when my mother would drive a car other than her own back even when she was a young woman in her late 40-60's. If she drove her 1974 LTD, she'd take off just a bit of traction loss on the sand/gravel driveway. Pinto::she almost get hit. The 86 Fleetwood brougham, so, so. Her last car the 2001 grand Marquis: she kicked gravel from 2001 until she stopped driving a few months ago. Even as her top speed slowed down from 60+ to the actual speed limit of 45, her take off never changed. Having said all that, when I'm in eco mode, I don't press harder. And when I try to accelerate gently in normal mode, my foot almost cramps . šŸ˜…

Interesting views on slippery mode. I don't do enough highway to see if slippery is better for highway I just ALWAYS use Eco. But around town Eco mode produces much more slow down (regen) without touching the brake pedal generating more electricity charging battery . For around town I can't see HOW slippery mode would be as fuel efficient as Eco BUT have never done a comparison;. On 55 mph country type roads I see if I can time letting off gas and letting regen slow Mav down for approaching stop light. If I see I did it to late I hit L to cause harder regen. Assuming no one is behind me of course.

BUT like I said in snow slippery in MY Opinion is a bad choice. Normal works well. When I say snow I mean either packed down or several inches of fresh snow. . have blizzak snow tires I think OEM tires are AWFUL in snow.
Slippery mode "around town" beats ECO because it lets the truck coast further...therefore being in battery longer for better mileage. If that's what you're asking. I wouldn't say it's "better" overall...but definitely more fuel efficient of those two modes.

For the highway - slippery reduces the regen effect on coasting situations, and reduces the punch cruise control may do to get back up to speed perhaps allowing EV mode still, and seems to grab the EV easier/faster in CC(or manual) without needing to like dip to 0% power to engage.
My CC usage is usually 65 mph or higher - so no EV anyway unless downhill, so no benefit.

For me it fails in my mainly city due to braking - enough fast braking needed that only having the bottom 20% of regen available leads to going into the pads very often accidentally.

Indeed for Go pedal - it's only the initial say 20% of movement is remapped to be less power given, after that it seems to ramp up just as fast as other modes - so any punching it is about the same.

Try the Sport mode sometime when you have some 25-35 mph tight winding roads with little traffic.
The steering remap is noticeable, the gear "shifting" is strange after a long time in normal eCVT.
Depending on how go pedal is worked to get and keep in electric normal or economy modes can give better mpg. Try pulse to 75-80 up to 60% or ? on power gage then coast using 8-9% power gage coasting down to 60-70. On long distance drive I'll just economy or cruise in slippery seems best no effort but mpg 34-37 depending.

YEAH, I know - Try it, you'll like it...I've seen some people not ask and try it. Usually at the garage or hospital.....
There's no drastic difference between modes. It's not like shifting into reverse at 70 mph. It just optimizes things like throttle and braking response for the respective situations.

My habit is molded by my 1.5 million miles in a tractor trailer rig. Always trying to accelerate at maximum economy.
Always striving for 7.0 - 8.5 mpg it was a must to try for maximum fuel economy. Companies expected that, demanded that.
It involved staying in the optimum power band,
Think keeping the revs between 1,800- 2,100 rpm’s.
You had 13 to 21 gears, with a three speed rear end.

If I drove a hybrid my mpg’s would suck.
I’m always seeking power even when I don’t need it.
I accelerate very briskly in my Ecoboost.
It must like it my mpg’s show that.

Not sure if I am misunderstanding you.

It is without a doubt Eco mode is better around town. I rarely touch the brake pedal as regen does most of the stopping and when I do touch brake its real light so not to use friction brakes. I can accelerate lightly to keep gas engine from even firing can get it to 30 mph zero gas engine. Get in the 60 mpg when done . Once I get on roads 40 mph or higher Eco may not be as effective but still use Eco mode. You are correct in slippery it coasts like a regular car which gives zero braking by regen until you touch brake pedal. Sure you could then press brake real light and MAYBE be as effective BUT I doubt it.

Not sure you meant slippery is better around town because it isn't, zero doubt. Coasting isn't a thing in around town driving. Maybe your definition of around town is not the same as mine. 30 mph max. Stop lights and stop signs galore .

We also become accustomed to certain sounds and sensations. That is why some people would never give up their V8 even though a turbo V6 maybe faster. It is also why some people would never purchase an electric vehicle even if they had equal range and could be charged just as quickly as a fill up. Their car needs to make noise. It is also why some people would never be happy with a CVT even if they did not have a bad reputation. It's why many companies give their CVT simulated shifts. Having said that, simply love my hybrid. But the one thing I would never adjust to and be happy with is the fact that when I accelerate aggressively, the motor revs up as if it's stuck in first gear and just drones in a monotone rrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr. As long as my foot is on the accelerator, especially if I floorboard it such as when passing on a two-lane road. My cousin bought a Camry Hybrid and traded it back in after a couple of months because he could not get over the fact that it sounded like his transmission was slipping when he took off. The Maverick is reasonably quiet under normal acceleration. So it doesn't bother me. But when I take off fast, I always think that there are a bunch of people listening and judging 🤣

FWIW,
I still like being first at the light and leaving the traffic behind.
Ford should have given us sound profiles to choose from and a way to make our own.
I think I’d be cool for my Maverick to sound like a Caterpillar or an Abram’s.

Slippery is IDEAL for around town MPG.
Many posts in many threads about this.

How the truck feels and responds is personal preference.

I will join the camp that you can do anything in any mode.

Modes just optimize for certain situations with any mode being sufficient for any situation.

Yeah, you are correct. My definition of City is anything that I’m not on the highway but yeah it was meant to be for a little bit faster roads than the 30 mile an hour stop sign scenario. If I’m in bumper-to-bumper, stop sign lights and more stopping I’m in Eco but when I get on the 45 mph on my way home from work that’s where I’m in slippery.

I use Slippery mode for economy, Economy mode for sport driving, Normal mode for towing, Towing mode for normal driving, and Sport mode for slippery driving. It's so obvious!
If you could just rename the modes you could make a selection without any needed translation..:wink:

Either way, my aunt (my mom's sister about 86 ish) learns and knows the sound of my vehicles. She once said that she didn't recognize the vehicle I was driving. But she heard me take off (I have to turn by her house) and figured it was me based on how I took off. I'm sure she's learned the sound of the Maverick by now. šŸ˜‚
