Hey, y'all!

How many amateur radio operators do we have on the site? How many are actually buying Mavericks?

How many are planning to use your Maverick's power outlets to run your rigs?

I know I hoping to go mobile, with my Dad in my Maverick for the 2022 Field Day.

What about everybody else (if they're out there)?

Both my wife (N9IBA) and I (WM9A) have not been active in Amateur radio for many years but we are hoping that you will keep the group updated with your progress!

General Class here - yes I plan on using a rig with the Maverick. Plan is to to do HF with a portable antenna at the camp ground.

N1PRS here. I'm hoping to install my Icom IC-5100A in the Maverick ... assuming I receive it. :)

I'm a curious fella, would you mind sharing about what exactly amateur radio operators do and why you do it? It sounds like there is a community of operators. Have a great day!

KE4MVV General class and have not researched antenna options yet for 2M or HF operation.

Some others on here could probably explain it better than me, but I've always explained Amateur Radio as CB with the added requirements for education and etiquette.

I got my license when I was 11, and "trying to be like Dad." But, I've only operated a handful of times since then.

For me, I'm just excited about having a pair of "regular outlets," and not being limited to MacGyvering off the vehicle electrical system and/or 12v outlet.

When I was 13, or 14, I watched my Dad fry a mobile 10M rig while trying to vampire off the car electrical system. He is a lifelong Ham nerd who got his Amateur Extra license back when 20WPM code was still a requirement. So, this was a rare mistake that cost him a few hundred 1991 $'s. I am NOT the knowledgeable person that my Dad is, so I've always been afraid of mobile operating, even though I know all you need is a 12v plug.

My dad has been a HAM since he was a kid (K8AES). I never really got into it myself but he still has his license, (although he doesn't use it much these days.)

When my dad was first starting he became friends with another HAM who had listened to live distress calls from the Titanic. It's a pretty cool community, and I always enjoy seeing the license plates.

KO4JXP in the house!
I have a Midland DBR2500 (rebranded Anytone 778UV) that will be going in the Maverick. Right now, using it in the garage with an AC-to-12V converter and it works great when I have time to be engaged.

It can be different things to different people.
To some, it is making contact with people throughout the world and the challenge of communicating with Morse Code or using radio technically in ways most don't (e.g. skip propagation, moon bounce).
I'm not a talker. For me, I was using it for RPV stuff before modern drones and quad-copters were a thing. The license allowed me to transmit 2Ghz and 5Ghz video from airborne RC vehicles back in the day. There are many commercial products to do this now, but it was all experimental then.
I also participated in some fox and hound events, where you locate a transmitter via coordinated triangulation.
I'm sure others can add to this list.

To build on what Red Ryder says just above, I got my license in the early 2000's when I joined my town's CERT team. I've helped with communications during public events (our local Thanksgiving 5K & our local spring river race (canoes and kayaks)) as well as during searches for missing persons throughout the state and the neighboring states. I've also helped out passing communications along during storms and longer duration power outages (I have batteries that I can recharge via small solar panels or my home's standby generator).

Beyond those "useful" purposes, I've also used my license and radios to simply chat with and keep in touch with friends both local and distant.
