Also to go with something else said, if the EB had a higher towing capacity than the hybrid you might see more ebs sold and less hybrid which needed with the calculation.

Remember, Ford is basically having the F series buyers subsidizing the Maverick to increase average fuel economy until more F series are electric and can start under pricing them eventually against the diesel and gas F series.

True enough.

But if you don't need all of the extras, it's a hell of a deal. Even if you only need a few extras, it's still a hell of a deal!

Agree with the poster on AWD with FX4 is 2k and so is EB FWD. Makes no sense.

Should be 3 tow ratings at least based on current models. 2k-3k and 4k

Just going to put this here for some comparison.
I had this Chevy from 2015 until I got the Mav. It sucked pulling my small boat. It sucked with braking. Boat was 550lb hull weight. Motor is 260lbs and trailer another 400. Have not pulled with MAV yet, but have with my BS 3cyl EB. Pulls and brakes much better. I’m sure my MAV EB non two package will do great. The heavy Chevy might brake better in some situations where weight of tow vehicle matters. Below are Colorado specs. Not so sure I would get into all the tow numbers and beat up on Maverick’s 2k tow rating.

Mechanical
  • 2.5L 4-cylinder engine
    • 200 hp @ 6300 rpm
    • 191 lb-ft of torque @ 4400 rpm
    • Direct Fuel Injection and Variable Valve Timing help optimize power and efficiency
    • Dual Overhead Camshaft design
  • 6-speed automatic transmission
    • May require additional optional equipment
  • 4.10 rear axle ratio
  • 5,500 lbs. GVWR

Surprisingly, the US Kia website doesn’t list the towing capacity of the Kia Soul, so we had to travel down under to the Australian version of the Kia website to get numbers.
Kia Soul towing capacity numbers

NOTE: We are going to look for the 2022 Kia Soul towing specs for US models, and will update this piece when we find it.

If you are looking to tow big heavy loads, the Kia Soul is not the vehicle you should be using for the job! Keep in mind that the US owner’s manual for the Kia says that you shouldn’t be towing, while the Aussie version of the site lists numbers.

Towing capacity unbraked550 kg / 1.200 lbs
Towing capacity braked1100 kg / 2.400 lbs

Braked adds 1200 lbs. but the Soul is not coming with an integrated controller.
Ford could just say that an AWD EB Non 4K Braked = 3200lbs. Really not hard to add an aftermarket controller

Kia Soul can tow up to 2k

The rental company gave me one of these back in 2010 or so. Drove it from the Denver Airport to a conference in vail. It couldn't even go the speed limit with the pedal to the floor. Semis were flying past me at like 75mph and I'm in this tiny soul at like 55. Not fun. I'm sure they've gotten a lot better.

You have to remember it's not just weight of the item your towing. It's also wind resistance and overall size.

Just for shits and giggles I looked up a travel trailer that falls under that weight. 3800 dry (yeah I know all our stuff etc but I'm ignoring that) but it's 23 feet long, 10 feet tall, and 8 feet wide.

That's a hell of a load behind a truck the size of Maverick.

Sure you could argue that a flat trailer with 4000+ pounds doesn't have that wind resistance but then you have the issue of different ratings for different trailers/loads.

would like to know the exact criteria they use to determine the tow rate. Seems it's pulled out of a hat.
Dude. Let me introduce you to a little thing called Google. It's not exactly a mystery. There's a fucking SAE standard for godsake.

And it's cheap for what you get. It's really a no brainer. If anyone without a Hybrid should ever tow, the 4KT package is worth it.
Is it though? Yeah the tow package is cheap at $745 but in order to get it you have to add AWD and the upgraded engine. Adding those two option to the Mav is not cheap.

As one poster pointed out, there’s no reason an AWD EB with FX4 should be rated the same as the hybrid FWD.

There should be a middle designation of 3k for this.
