Radar Detector Recommendation?

I’m not leaving an $800 radar detector in my truck. Ever. Has anyone had experience with a modest or “popular priced” radar detector?

Waze seems to be pretty accurate on the highways and to be honest, if your detector has gone off, they've probably already read your speed. That's been my experience anyway.

I tried a bunch ranging from $200 to $800, and the Uniden R8W is the winner! It’s not cheap, but it is a beast of a detector that leaves all others in the dust. I use Vortex settings on the R8W. With front and rear detection and arrows for the front, rear, and sides, it tells you exactly where the cop is sitting. I have picked up cops shooting K band from over 5 miles away, and it has paid for itself many times over. I don’t leave it on the windshield, I keep it in the console or glove box and bring it in at night.

I have been running Uniden RDs since returning to motorcycling 20 years ago.
I have an R3, R4, and R7 spread across my rides. All still work well. The R7/8s have direction arrows.
These units are amazing at filtering out the BS alerts and warning you with plenty of time to make any corrections before the police K/KA units know you're coming.
Word of caution: These detect LASER and a few newer techs but LASER shoots diagonally so when you light up, you're toast!

Save money on a radar detector and speeding tickets by not speeding. It’s really easy (and free) to not speed.

None, save your money for a ticket lawyer. Between all the false activations, and reflections, they have become more of a nuisance. Hell we have ghost cars here, that cops use, no body in them, but the radar is on battery causing everyone to slam on brakes.

Perfect. I run an r4w (couldn’t justify the r8w) with Vortex settings and ka segmentation.

I run highway radar companion app and have it set to alert for reported police 1 mile and the r4w for ka usually alerts 5-10 seconds ahead of highway radar.

In the 55 MPH limit days I had a radar detector but now that the speed limits are reasonable in most cases I don't see a need. Running the speed limit +5 MPH is fine and won't get you pulled over.

Below is my set up currently. I have a RAD Mag mount that I am going to put to the left of the black housing next to the headliner however RAD said do not connect to a 12v source that gets constant power like the overhead lights so I am going to route underneath/behind the black housing and then run it down the passenger A pillar to the fuse box just to be sure.

However the cable really doesn't bug me as much as I thought it would so I'm not in a rush to get it the RAD mount installed.

A retired State Police officer told me the best way to use a radar detector is to ride behind a vehicle who is also speeding. When your detector sounds off slow down. The person in front of you will likely be ticketed instead you. Speeding is not the best way to be a leader. Coming in second could save you a ticket.
Since I use "Drive Safe and Save", I stay within 8 mph over the posted limit.

Yep! People ask me why I have one in my hybrid when I drive very conservatively unless on a road trip.

Mostly for awareness. Paired with highway radar gives me ALPR, aviation, red light, and speed camera warnings. I want to know what is around me.

It's certain that at home and every time we leave home we are being surveilled. These posts are being monitored. That's not being oversensitive or paranoid. It's simply the reality of life in the time we live.
I just pray that when I leave home drivers will drive their vehicle and not be distracted and that I don't give LEO's a reason to site me.
Good news is, unless your in Virginia or Washington DC detectors are legal.

I've had good luck with Unidens, but they're not picking up the new photo-radar traps around Colorado. Some new units say they keep GPS maps of traps, but I haven't heard claims that they detect the photo-radar bands. Anyone know?
