I think you're over-engineering things.
Agreed. I was bored while my Mav was at the dealer for 2+ weeks, plus I wanted to keep the pipe from contacting the window frame/glass, and minimize any chance of breakage. I've got a grand total of 4 bucks into this proof of concept, who knows what 2.0 might look like?

My biggest regret was not getting that small window. Never would use it but looks cool.
I distinctly recall thinking that $150 now was cheaper than trying to put one in later. Even if I didn't use it much I'd still have the option it one presented itself.

This is a good idea. I have a hard tonneau and occasionally need to carry a couple oof lengths of pipe or some 2 x 4's.

Exactly this. Seemed more worth it for the price up front than replacing the entire rear glass trying to add it later. I don't have any practical plans for using it currently, but the day I brought it home

Not sure if this helps your situation, but you can slide a 1/4" plexiglass window directly into the existing tract. I drilled a hole to fit the rod holder, mostly for theft/security purposes. I didn't want my rear window exposed and wide open while I was out fishing.

Also you can raise the middle back seat head rest & lock it about 6" higher than its resting position. That could be useful for load support or tie downs.

It makes changing / repairing the third brake light easier. Your hands can be inside and outside the roof / headliner where the wires are at the same time.

A hard brake or a rose yet, rear end someone, and that pipes going through the windshield.
I would rather lose a windshield than get rear ended with a setup like below and have one of those boards come through the cab into a passengers back.

It would more than likely go through the other car as well or just splinter. The chances of becoming a kabob are probably slim

Depends if it is hit by something more solid like a bumper/engine and the strength of the wood.

I had a friend die from dozing off and running into a simple low wooden fence on the side of the road. A piece of the fence came up through the bottom of his car and through his body.

2x4s, blown by a hurricane/tornado have been known to go right through the walls of a house. Wood is very strong in compression.

Home Depot paid to replace a windshield from one of their nice employees loading boards into a Buick Enclave. Seemed to fit until the back hatch lid was closed and the front end of the boards hit the windshield.

No, for a couple of reasons;

1) Can't justify spending $800 to bring a $6 stick of conduit home a couple of times a year

2) The Elevate (or similar) rack would be a violation of the HOA I live in, as it would look like a "work" truck. They very specifically have told me "no ladder racks".

How about canoe racks?
