When I was a kid in the Navy, I bought my very first new vehicle when I was stationed in the WashDC area. It was a 1985 Toyota 2WD pickup. I was so proud of my brand new truck!

Then, one morning in rural Maryland, my girlfriend and I came out of a breakfast place and found big, lifted 4x4 monster-style trucks parked on either side of my shiny new Toyota. It was downright shocking to see... I sure wish I had been carrying a camera (pre-cellphone days).

I was devastated.

We lived in rural Georgia at the beginning of the ‘80s. All young men seemed to have to have full sized pickups lifted a foot in the air with huge tires. It looked like a convention of Monster Trucks in town on weekends.

Gas goes up, not so many big rigs bought. Gas price comes down, trucks get bigger and get bought. Gas goes up again.

Not suckers, just not too smart or refusing to accept reality, anyone who bought one of those gas hogs after 2008 when gas hit the at that time record of $4.25 gets little sympathy from me, they should know by now how volatile fuel prices can be, the exception would be someone who MUST have a full size one for work & most are available & will do the job with a V6 instead of an 8.
