Yeah, there should be something from the manufacturer instead of a podunk sales person. Though I can say here of late when I have bought a car, the salesperson was a little less pushy. When I bought my wife's Maverick (yes, it was for her) the sales lady went way out of her way to get us this vehicle.
I was being a smartass. It's page 315:

I have had "nice" salespeople, but I have never once worked with a sales-side person at a dealership who knew more about the vehicle I was shopping for than I did.

It seems like a lot of the dealers have a scam of the week in order to sell some low dollar item at a high dollar price. When I bought my Lexus, the only thing I got was an extended warranty and a windshield insurance policy. My regular insurance agent, who I no longer have did not like to have someone file an insurance claim for a windshield, let alone help with an insurance claim. Happy to say he is no longer my agent. There was some kind of treatment that they did to the paint that has really protected it going on 3 years now. I think some dealers are a little more prideful of how they do business than others. The Ford dealer I bought my Maverick from is one of the better ones in the area.

So true, the salesman I bought my Lexus from did not know that the vehicle had real leather seats in the front and faux leather in the back. I kept telling him it sure looks and smells like real leather and he said no. Finally, he had to ask another sales person and sure enough, I was right (for once in my life, other than marrying my wife of almost 52 years). Or at least that is what she tells me.

The air filter is $29 retail, paying $56 for labor seems high for something you can do yourself, sure, So do it yourself if you want to save money.

Is the dealer supposed to tell customers to do it themselves? Or not pay a tech to install it? Lose money on the transaction? Genuinely curious what you all think is supposed to happen here.
they are not supposed to scalp old ladies, were you a service tech or writer?

Or the 295 dollar nitrogen for the tires, or the 10 dollar can of scotch guard treatment that costs 300 dollars
had to decline that racket, atmosphere air is 79% nitrogen, the only advantage I see is a little less loss of pressure when its cold(pressure comes back when the tire is warm)

Seems like the carmakers are going the route of the software developers--subscription based, so that you will be renting a car in perpetuity based on this item for $8 a month, this item for $7 a month and so on. And then because of the EULA you don't own it and after you are tired of the software (car) you have to return it to the developer or manufacturer. LOL

Majority of the comments in here are probably done by people that don't actually service cars for a living, and only see the "dollar amount" as the "rip-off" when the reality of it is that MOST PEOPLE CAN'T EVEN CHECK THEIR OWN OIL, much less a filter, tire, etc. And so while yes, there is some parts markup there, you're also paying for the labor as well. And yes in most cases, it takes less than 5 minutes to change these filters out, MAJORITY of people can't be bothered nor have the skillset required to even be able to perform that task. So for all of those that can do it yourself, great! And for those that can't *or don't want to* they pay the prices and that gives them peace of mind. Dealerships generally operate entirely on their service departments, because selling the cars is not where the money is made 🤷‍♂️

I will do what I can to save some money, but there are some things that are above my pay grade, or I am just not agile enough any more to do some of those things. But I will give it one heck of a try.

Yeppers.
Does my wife have the capability to change her own air filter? In technical terms yes. She has two functioning legs, arms and hands. She knows how to open the hood and prop it open. She knows where the air filter is. She knows the cover is held down with two snap clips.
Will she ever change her air filter? NOPE.
Just like checking her oil. She knows how to, but she doesn't check it.
Does that mean that she's a sucker? She calls it convenience.

Mechanics generally don't have labor rates broke down in 10 minute increments. It's either an half hour or hour job depending upon the owners discretion. The labor charge can be what the market will bear $80 to $250 an hour. And parts markup.

I'm at the service center and they recommended changing my air filter for 84.85. I had to laughed at them. Asked them how they justify the 84.95 for an airfilter that sells for 21.00 and event at that price the auto parts store is making profit. I can see them charging 31.00 for a filter. I understand that parts are marked up as thats how they make money. But damn $85 not including labor. Maybe they are trying recoup the money on my complimentary oil change. Also, the cabin air filter was quoted $50.
I went for an oil change they offered to put a bottle of fuel Injector for 19.99. I know I can get the same one for less than 5.00. I watched them put the bottle in a lady's vehicle in front of me. I wondered what the hell they're putting in her fuel tank, and how much are they charging? I guess there is a sucker born every minute.

You're right. I don't service cars, but I do service vehicles that cost more than the inventory sitting on the lot of a dealership. I understand mark up on parts.

If they would have said XX. amount for the part and xx. amount for the labor even though I would have denied it. That's better than 'its just for the filter".
