It would be great if the Maverick is classified as a crossover here. Passenger vehicle tags are about 1/3 less. We'll see.
I cannot put my finger on the term at the moment but I believe Ford called it a CUV. Crossover Utility Vehicle?

I'm going to call my F150 "Me" and the Maverick "Mini-Me".

All terms are really just marketing and have little bearing on form and fact. What it is, is what it does. Is a Ford Transit not really a van because it is a unibody (like the Maverick) instead of body on frame like Chevrolet?

but again it’s your states dmv and is normally based on your VIN, in California it’s weirder
Yup. The Maverick is legally a motor truck in California, but it meets the definition of "pickup truck", so even though you have truck tags, pay a weight fee, and have commercial vehicle registration, you don't have to stop at weigh stations or have an MCP.

Cargo vans are motor trucks by definition and do not meet the pickup truck definition, so they legally need to stop at weigh stations and have an MCP. It's rarely enforced though.

A vehicle's classification can be found on the door jamb sticker. Pickups and cargo vans say "truck"; passenger cars, minivans, and SUVs say "MPV" (multi-passenger vehicle); and passenger vans say "Bus (not school bus)".

GM was pushing the gray area for a bit. The Avalanche was a pickup truck, but the Envoy XUV was a passenger vehicle.
