What's the most people have hauled in the bed? I need to move a Cummins marine engine 40 miles and weighs about 1700-1800. I would think the weight all the way forward would work best. I know specs are 1500 but wondering who here has done something similar.

There is a guy on Reddit who hauled two yards of topsoil which is much heavier and bigger. Anyone else??

You would probably be fine, or you could just rent a small trailer from uhaul for the day....

Just don’t drive it like you stole it. (The Cummins or the Maverick)

My truck works every day and hauls stuff. I've done 1500lbs that was a scaled weight no issues. Air up the tires put it in tow/haul mode and go for it. Take your time and you'll be fine. Most truck weight limits have more to do with brake performance than the actual powertrain limitations. Give yourself plenty of room to stop and all will be fine. Make sure its tied down well. If that much weight gets loose in the bed sheet metal damage will result.

I’d rent a u-haul. Spread the weight over the extra axle

With you in it, you're significantly over payload. Get a trailer.

I put a diesel locomotive engine in the back of mine. I also had airlift air bags in the rear. Get some. They are like $120 and you can DIY without special tools in under an hour. Weight uncertain. But not light.

A u-haul is $20 and would be easier to unload as well.

Over? Yes. Significantly? Meh. 🤷🏻‍♂️

300 lbs is just one wide bodied American. Not that much
I’m not that wide sheesh :)

Looks like I’m going to send it. I don’t like the idea of a trailer. The engine is almost 4x the cost of the truck and would rather it be a little more protected.

Thank you all

When rating a vehicle for load capacity, the limiting factor is dynamic load, not static load. Think of a Maverick going over an elevated rail road crossing at 20 mph. No problem. Now do that with an 1800 lb engine in the bed. Now it’s a very real problem because the suspension just bottomed out and parts started getting bent or broken.

There are examples of most every truck out there carrying twice its rated capacity. You just have to keep the dynamic load down by driving slower and avoiding roads with big bumps.

Can the Maverick carry twice its rated load? Maybe not, since it is a unibody and not body-on-frame. The low tech frame can be overbuilt to be stronger than necessary at a very low price point. Doing that in a unibody will make the price skyrocket.

Do I think 1800 lbs in a vehicle rated for 1500 is ok? Yes indeed. It’s 20% over. Just drive 20% slower than if you were carrying the rated 1500 lbs.
