I was thinking of painting the cat as a deterrent. Any recommendations for a paint that is low fuss for this application but still holds up over the years? Ideally, I would like to spray some orange paint with minimal prep and no primer. Obviously, I don't need the paint job to be pretty.

As an aside, how hot do cats get on hybrids especially the second one in the Maverick?

How is orange paint going to prevent theft?

The point is to deter theft because the thieves may have a harder time selling the converter. Police departments have recommended this.

I plan on etching my VIN number.

If you have a hybrid, it's in the engine bay next to the engine. There is no easy way to access it.
I've read on this forum that there are two catalytic converters including one that is readily accessible to a thief. When I went under my truck I confirmed that there is something that looks like a catalytic converter that is readily accessible.

Yea I looked at some other posts after I replied and realized there are 2 converters, not just 1.

Better off wrapping it with cable and hose clamps

Not bad . I was thinking of the same idea. I was thinking of using garage door cable. Definitely give a reciprocating saw a problem. I think I would run it further down the pipe on both sides a little more. (y)

Better off wrapping it with cable and hose clamps ...

Orange High-Temp Paint
Do you have experience with that paint working on catalytic converters? The paint is only rated to 500 F, which as I understand is within the normal operating temperature of cats. Perhaps hybrid cats are cooler because the engine doesn't have to run all the time and because of the Atkinson cycle.

No, but pretty much any grill paint or engine paint will do. Remember that although the inside of the Cat. may see high temps, you are actually painting the heat shield ā€œshellā€ that surrounds the internal Catalytic chamber. These paints all work to create a ceramic coating that holds up to high temperatures. Just be aware, if you get overspray on anything, once it bakes on, it will not come off, not even with solvents.

Makes sense. I've painted a charcoal grill with engine enamel before. It was easy to use.

apparently mustard doesn't work

The Oscar Mayer Wienermobile has been dogged by some thieves in Las Vegas.
The 27-foot hot-dog-shaped vehicle was in Sin City this past weekend for a series of events tied to Super Bowl weekend, but early Friday morning the Wienermobile’s catalytic converter was stolen

But if you must:

Orange High-Temp Paint
Yep. CatClamp is one brand to use. Universal fit, easy to install on your own and under $200 last time I checked. In my mind, much better than paint.

So these shady guys roll up to a metal recycling facility in an old truck with 40 freshly cut off cats in the bed, and the equally shady guy behind the counter says ā€œI’ll take 39 but you keep the one with the orange paint?

Orange paint will not deter that theft, by the time they get under the truck they are cutting something off. And if there’s a guard on the cat, they can just cut a larger piece of the exhaust off and take it, guard and all.

Good luck
