I was just thinking about how crucial OEM car manufacturers warranties are. My dad‘s truck and my truck have both been into the dealer multiple times for several different issues already imagine if we would’ve been out of the warranty. What would those repair bills have cost us? A lot.

Other vehicles have issues as well. My dad’s newer Tacoma with low miles just had an issue OUTSIDE off the 3 year warranty. An external transmission shift sensor went bad. The repair was 3.5 hours of labor plus parts plus diagnostic fee.
You had to remove the center console and Toyota is charging between 900 and 1100 at Toyota dealers in area to do the repair.

My dad’s Toyota truck is JUST outside of the manufacturers warranty and bam! $1100 bucks just like that.
Could you imagine? I feel so bad for my dad. That’s a large unexpected expense.

Real eye opening experience.
I absolutely LOVE my Maverick but my warranty is almost up. What should I do?

I think you've highlighted just how useless warranties really are as your father's Tacoma was still under the 5yr/60k mile powertrain warranty but Toyota specified an "external" sensor which pushed the repair outside of the warranty coverage and cost him $1100.

If you are worried about owning a vehicle without a warranty you have two options - buy an ESP from Flood or Granger...or buy a Hyundai Santa Cruz.

Only you know what is right for you and you should do what ultimately makes you feel comfortable.

EDIT: Time is also constant.

I'm normally against the extended warranty on anything. However in recent years I've changed my mind when it comes to vehicles. Especially with all this technology and packing the engine bay tighter than a bullfrogs a-hole. Being able to do your own work is being harder and harder.

In the end it's a gamble, you know damn well that these extended warranty wouldn't be in business if they lost money. So they extended warranty company makes money because the odds are in their favor. My wife and I got a 10 year / 100k ESP for ours.

When I bought my 09 Escape 3.0l in 2011, it still had 1yr and 20k miles on the 3yr/36. I did not get any extra warranty or anything like that after manufacturer expired. I had the Escape until this past fall when my Mav came in and I traded in the Escape. I put 215k on it during that time and did not have any issues other than wear and tear items needing replacement.

Now with the Mav being my first new purchase and me expecting to have the Mav for many years/miles, I figured it would be a good investment to get some extra warranty so that before the Mav starts showing its age/wear and tear...if something goes wrong, its can be fixed under warranty. But like others have mentioned with how much technology is on modern vehicles, I assume if any 1 electronic part goes out, it will be $$$ to replace. So I opted for an extra 7yr/100k. Because if I keep my Mav for lets say 13yrs and something $$$ needs replacement, I feel that it finally wore out...but at 3yrs/40k miles.... should not be wore out.

Now I am hoping that nothing will ever go wrong with the Mav, but I have some insurance that if something does go wrong, it will be covered. I believe you still can purchase extra warranty via like Granger and such, but it depends on if you feel like you would be wasting money or worth it to you. And I am sure other factors as well, how long you plan to keep it, or how many miles you think you will drive, etc. But to me, it is worth it even if I do not use it, its the peace of mind that if something fails, should be covered.

*note: my dealership also offers a complimentary 20yr 200k on all brand new vehicles purchased through them. I attached a SS of what is also covered by them. But new vehicles today being computers on wheels, I mainly purchased the extra warranty to cover that aspect, as most mechanical issues are covered by my dealership.

Rent a Turo once in a while? That's a lot of miles on a new-ish car. 1 yr. 14k here. I've got a Turo rented for the weekend at $104 total. I'll be slapping 600 miles on that Turo overnight.

OR- Bam! You just spent $2500 on an extended warranty, haha. Really though, the EW's look reasonable up until about 8 years, 100k. You're gonna pay either way. Might as well pay up front?

I bought an ESP from Granger, the last time I was back in Des Moines. Money well spent.
I bought a non-Ford extended at the time of purchase, primarily because my wife thought it was a good idea. I can just picture me ignoring my wife and regretting it 5+ years later due to a major mechanical failure.

Thanks to MTC I learned about purchasing Ford ESP through Granger (learned about Flood later). I promptly canceled the dealership-purchased warranty and once the refund was received, I purchased a 10-year, 85,000 miles, $100 deductible warranty through Granger. I also bought the fob and light replacement options.

Is it worth it? I have no clue, but I have peace of mind knowing that I will not be hearing from my wife on this subject in the next 10 years 😎

That’s cool!
Notice it seems like my dad’s truck transmission shift sensor would likely not be covered under that dealers warranty they offer.
Probably would be covered but I’m not positive with an extended warranty.
Nonetheless, that’s still really cool!!
Thanks for the reply and have a blessed evening!

I agree. There’s so much electronics now on these cars, especially a hybrid that it’s almost necessary to get the warranty if you plan on keeping it longer than the manufacturers warranty.

Since you waited you will have to pay more I think. When I got my 24 Lariat Hybrid I got an 8Yr, 85,000 mi from Granger Ford for about $1200.

I am the warranty .
All my life I have never owned a vehicle with a warranty. Including multiple mercedes( even twin turbo v12 s600) .
First thing I do is research before purchase , buy the appropriate diagnostic tool , for scan, Autel, star das, etc and get a full manual and do the diagnostic myself , ask around in forums, at dealers or independant shops .then do parts exchange.
This is my first vehicle that has a warranty from the factory . But I already swapped the tremor suspension out , am making chromoly a-arms ,cut the wheel wells and moved the ecu out of the wheel well and put 32” tires on it (2000 miles on it)Some people on here think I’m crazy but my money and time is , well , mine.

Your other options is pay more money for extended warranty on an older depreciating asset or buy a newer larger depreciating asset and take the loss at the front end when you sign the dealer docs every couple years . I keep most of my vehicles for 10 or more years but I average 3-5 vehicles for myself plus the wife’s and any kid vehicles in stock (2 at the moment ),oh and a off road buggy, golf cart and kids motorcycle and quad , working on vehicles is a part time job .or it would be a part time job just scheduling , taking them to dealers, and waiting for someone else to fix them while sitting in some car dealer waiting room . Can’t sit around that much .don't have that much money either.

Plus I figure I can afford more of the toys if I haven’t paid anyone the $150/hour shop rate on anything in 35 years. But that’s up to your wallet and/or drive.

I think most of society chooses to just make a payment on 1 or 2 vehicles and rotate stock every three or 4 years when warranty is up .
Your money/ time /drive , your choice!

What happens if you buy an EW and sell the truck?

What happens if you buy an EW and total the truck?
Prorated cancellation refund. Or if you sell it to another private party it can be transferred to them for ~$75.
