Granted, I’ve had my truck for almost 3 weeks, but I am averaging 49 miles to the gallon, I have had highs of 67 and a low of 42 . This is by math , not the truck. I could not be happier.
Your doing the math after you fill up at the gas station? Miles traveled divided by how many gallons it took to fill up.

I have a 25 Lariat hybrid AWD, fully loaded with a topper, decked drawer system, and equipped with tools. I have 11,000 miles (I picked it up new this past April). I live in Abingdon, VA, a rural mountain area, and I am still getting 31 mpg. I love the way it drives, and I'm glad that I bought the Lariat version.

They charge extra for driving a hybrid? What's the logic there?
You are paying less highway tax because of fewer gas fill ups. Highway tax covers road repair which you are paying less of. Ev's pay even more in some states, for the same reason.

Yes but a Honda Civic 2.0 turbo gets better MPG than a Maverick hybrid.....

Doesn't matter, Honda is using gas only; you're paying tax on your full purchase. A hybrid if driven normally is using about 25% electric. I'd like to see your Civic getting 56 mpg in the city, and 46 on the highway.

This makes zero sense.

I'd like to see your Maverick getting 46 on the highway....

I’d love to see a Maverick get 56 in the city and 46 on the highway. Because we all know it ain’t getting that. Hell, I couldn’t even get that in my Prius. And they are EPA rated 10 mpg higher in the city and 17 mpg higher on the freeway than what a Maverick is.

If your worried about power with the hybrid, try it in Sport mode. Holy cow it has some giddy up! I mostly use it when I am merging lanes. Normal mode ain't bad either.

Nice setup. Virginia Highlands are beautiful. I have siblings in Marion and Radford VA. I prefer Abingdon and Bristol, just slightly better weather.

Well of course, aerodynamics is a thing!!!

In my 2015 Civic (regular model) I used to get 39mpg highway at 75mph, 42mpg at 65mph.

My point is that just because a vehicle is a hybrid doesn’t mean it isn’t contributing to the gas tax in a given state.

Driving my Maverick vs my 2023 Civic I am using more fuel and I was in the civic and if the Maverick wasn’t exempt I’d be on the hook for $100 annually.

Does it regularly!
Good day

It is my thought that fuel mileage claims etc could be clarified a bit.

The biggest difference between Canadian fuel and American fuel is the size of the respective gallon.

Imperial Gallon (Canada) is 4.5 liters,

American Gallon ((USA) is 3.78 liters.

Another possible factor is someone is a hyper-miler. An example of this could be following other vehicles closel enough to be in their displaced air bubble, thereby using them to break the wind (insert giggle here, if desired) and artificially increase fuel mileage (I blame NASCAR, as way too many people do this at highway speeds!) ;-)

I don't do this myself as I don't like being close to other drivers or their cars... rocks or debris being thrown by tires or potentially debris or pothole on the road that you now will not see in time to avoid. I like my space where possible.

Now, in the city I regularly get well over 50 mpg (summer time) and that is using the Imperial gallon measurement.

Examples of mpg difference between said gallons

2025 Maverick AWD, etc estimated fuel efficiency rating for highway travel.

1) 6.9 liters per 100 kms=62 (miles)÷6.9=8.9855 miles (there is roughly 62 miles in 100 kms distance)

1)a. 8.9855×3.78=33.965 miles per US gallon.

1)b. 8.9855×4.5=43.434 miles per Imperial gallon

City mileage is rated at 5.8 liters per 100 kms, or...

American gallon=40.406 mpg

Imperial gallon =48.103 mpg

Similar but yet very different. Hmmm...

Please forgive any little calculation errors i may have committed.

Using this simple math you can see how big of a difference there is between the two "gallons".

I know I drive quite sedately (mostly...) but I seem to run against the wind most days (love Bob Segers music) and I don't hyper-mile, so my mileage is not spectacular but we are happy with how our Mav serves us!

I hope this has been informative, to any who read this far.

Have a good one,

Andy

Is it possible that governments calculate the weight of the vehicle in question as part of the tax calculation?

I know from when we lived in Europe that road tax was calculated according to the vehicles weight. I think our Jeep Liberty would have had a road tax of about 350.00...every 3 months! They call it an ownership tax though, if I remember correctly.

We all know a semi with a loaded trailer inflicts much more wear and tear on a road surface then a Maverick, so a different taxation level?

Just look at the asphalt deformation at a highway intersection/red light where trucks have to stop repeatedly. The asphalt is almost squished out play dough.

Just another thought trying to compare apples to apples, not just the fuel burn rate.

Have a good one,

Andy
