So after the wipe with the rag You had no more gas smell on the Oil Cap? Gas smell is usually pretty hard to get rid of.
I only took one sniff when I opened during the oil change. I think the smell of gas when I opened it led me to sniff in the first place (not something I usually do) Put cap back on when I finished adding oil. Actually not even sure if I wiped it.

Maybe the gas smell on the cap yesterday was a remnant from 3 months ago? I’d like to think that, but the dipstick smelled like oil after the change & smelled of gas yesterday.

The oil level on my dipstick has remained the same since my change. Right in the middle. So if any gas is entering the oil - it is minuscule to my eye. But even a tiny tad of gas is easy to smell 👃

Yep, that oil dilution problem really hurt Honda’s reputation.

Do you know if their software update was done “Over The Air” stating simply “to improve engine performance” or were owners requested to visit a dealer for an update & explanation?

I know many many vehicles were affected on that popular engine!
The 2017 Honda CRV has no telemetrics and the software update was done at the dealer. It did not fix the problem but it reduced the problem. There is still considerable gas in the oil and the only way to reduce it is to get the engine hot to assist in evaporating the gas out of the oil.

The sky is falling, the sky simply must be falling for some people.

I cannot and will not go through life worrying about things like that.
I trust big blue, I’ve owned Nine Fords and taken all but one of them well past 100,000 miles, I took two past 300,000 and three past 150,000.
I’ve installed two water pumps across all these Fords, that’s it.

I’ve smelled gas under my oil fill cap many times over my decades.
The pcv system, remember that system ?
The gas smell ?

Bet most of ya never stuck a pcv valve in your mouth to see if it was clogged/working.

Every now and then some brainiac know it all would suck on it and get a nasty oily, gas smelling black Hair ball down his throat.

At was always so funny ! :’P

Ford issued the TSB for potential oil dilution due to a faulty high pressure fuel pump in certain vehicles (mine).

The sky isn’t falling if course - but it would be silly to ignore Ford’s warning.

I just today did my first oil change at 1080 miles and didn't notice any smell. My XL was built 4/25. Almost exactly 6 quarts came out.

But now I am of course going to run out to the garage and take a deep whiff of the old oil. :)
Rumours are going to get out that Maverick owners are a bunch of “oil cap sniffers”! 🤣

Some 24's like mine were built in October, wonder if they can be affected if its a part issue? Or is the hpfp a different part number on the 25?

My truck window sticker says 10/30/24, month, day, year. The door label says 11/24, month, year. The Ford web site says VIN Build Date: 11/07/2024, month, day, year. I believe the last is Ford's official record. I took delivery on the 30th of November, 2024. I asked for a shop towel and checked the oil before starting the engine. I checked it again when the road check was completed. I sniffed the cap and dip stick, I dug at the cap with my finger nail - no problems found. I drove it home 2 hours later. I check the oil every 1000 miles and after my 2 paid oil changes. I smell no gas, the oil is clean and full.

Anal? I think not. When working at a Chevy dealership as shop foreman, i saw a Corvette leave after an oil change with no oil in the crank case. It wet 4 blocks before the engine locked up. I caught a grease monkey that wiped off the oil filters to make it look like he had serviced the vehicles. I was called to another grease monkey's stall for a car that wouldn't start. He had filled the crankcase with 5 quarts and went to lunch. When he got back, he put another 5 quarts in the crankcase. Oil doesn't compress - the engine couldn't torn over. I told him to drain 5 quarts and it would be OK (I never let him work on my vehicle.) I saw new engines with bad heads or leaking head gaskets that turned the oil milky.

I could write a book on what I had to deal with. I check my car over regularly to catch any problems that may be developing and avoid as much trouble as possible. Don't worry about and ignore auto service? I'm not filthy rich, and I don't like driving the Malibu while my truck is in the shop. But hey, to each their own. Thankful that my Mav oil doesn't smell of gas - at this time,

It shouldn't be since the issue seems to be with the new 2.0 engine.

I'm sure I'll wish I'd never started.... its a slippery slope!!!
I’ve seen certain mechanics use their sense of taste to help diagnose an engine problem. But please seek help if you find yourself getting an urge to lick your oil cap.

M daddy,
Don’t you hate posts that start like that ?

My daddy told me to never ever buy a first run car or engine. I’ve always tried to buy the model that’s going out. It has a track record you can review.

I pushed the limit with my 2024 on purpose.
Last build, almost the last 2024 new on the lot.
Driven home on 12/31/24
@10,000 miles now and not a single issue.
9,800 miles on my 2025 Hybrid and nary a single issue.

The issue is associated with the build date affecting several engines. Fuel pumps and software don't know or care what engine or vehicle they are hooked to, as if they had feelings....
