Greetings, new owner of a '24 Mav Lariat 2.0EB AWD 4K tow. Ordered Dec, delivered Feb.
Did a search, but found no definitive answer, and the Owner's Manual doesn't address it either.
When do the radiator louvers close? Upper and lower set work together or separate? Based on ambient temp, coolant temp, or vehicle speed?
Is the radiator seen through the lower grill opening the base of the coolant rad, or a trans or oil cooler, or ac condenser?
Thanks, lots to learn about the new truck.

Congratulations on your new Maverick. Pictures of what your writing about will help. The lower part if not mistaken is the trans cooler you get with the 4K tow package, I believe. Like I said pictures would help otherwise we may be talking about two different things. Besides a picture of your truck that we all want to see., Would be appreciated.

Upper and lower grill openings each have active louvers. Upper looks like a coolant rad, lower looks like a trans cooler, but just trying to verify. The louvers do a simultaneous open/close/open cycle at engine start in my 50F garage, but curious what is the source for their movement while driving, and if they operate independently.

I've never been able to figure that out- I would assume they close at speed to allow better aerodynamics but open if needed.

We did notice a change in wind noise one time we were at about 50mph with windows open and accidentally turned A/C on, think the louvres opened?.. Unpushed the button and sound changed. (closed?) tried it a couple more times and it definitely sounded like the wind around the truck was changing.

The upper & lower ones on my Hybrid do the open & close cycle upon start - perhaps as a check for proper operation.

They likely operate based on coolant and engine temps. They would stay closed initially in cold weather to accelerate engine warmup for better mileage and improve emissions. Also, whether one is using cabin heat or cooling. On the Hybrid, whether the HV battery needs heating or cooling to maintain optimum operating temperature range.

Hey Troy.

Welcome to the club and congratulations on getting your Maverick!

Now that you have it, perhaps one of the first mods is to add a Maverick Truck Club decal so you can properly “represent.”

Two styles/sizes available:

Maverick Truck Club Decal (Glossy) | MaverickTruckClub - 2022+ Ford Maverick Pickup Forum, News, Owners, Discussions ($5 delivered)

Maverick Truck Club Decal (Transfer) | MaverickTruckClub - 2022+ Ford Maverick Pickup Forum, News, Owners, Discussions ($6 delivered)

I can confirm that the active louvers open and close on the non-hybrid Eco w/4K tow pkg. when you start the truck's engine.
Yesterday, I was looking at the front area and discovered that the active louvers for the tranny cooler had a leaf stuck in it. I also noticed that they didn't look symmetrical across the trans cooler...like one was busted but the lower louver had somehow got caught on the next one up on the driver's side. So, I carefully unjammed it and they all opened right up (it's warm outside here) . I also tested it on startup and showed my wife how to start the truck with just the key fob. She needs to do things rather than me just show her how. Anyway, when I started it, they closed and opened properly...so, I assume that all is well with them and that they didn't get damaged from being stuck in one position. I can also assume that they may have been stuck since I got it in May. Since leaves aren't blowing around much in the spring or summer. It's a good idea to check them out once in a while. :)

They're on all models to the best of my knowledge, my 23 XL hybrid has them too, and I've never been able to figure them out lol. I haven't noticed any sound, but my hearing is garbage 🤣 I've always noticed that if my trucks wet and I'm coming to a stop from 35+ it always seems to splatter water drops from the front of my hood straight to my windshield. I assume it's from the shutters, but can't confirm.

Good, non-technically written summary of active grille shutters:
