As much as I love beneficial technology, digital license plates seem like a solution in search of a problem.

Plus I have a deep hatred of advertising, and go to extreme lengths to remove it from devices I own/use.

A friend of mine has this digital plate, and while I admit that it's neat that he can change the message on it that displays with the tag, that is not worth $7 per month and giving up my vehicle location and trip time/speed data to advertisers.

I will stick with metal license plates.
Yep. F ads, F data tracking, F subscriptions

The bit about the company behind hem being hacked is from January 2023, and though they say that they have patched it, the fact is that a connected plate will always be more vulnerable than a hunk of metal with some characters embossed into it.

Why didn't the OP link to this article? They linked to two articles dated 2018 and then linked to the manufacture of the license plate.

Even the link you posted leads back to an article originally posted in 2018.

Just wait.

In a few years it will be integrated into the manufacture of every vehicle. It will come OEM. It will be mandatory and will be all 50 states.

Move, change states, sell the car, mouse click and your plate is updated.

They will be hardened, tamper resistant and theft resistant. Though theft will do you no good when everyone has one, and they are deactivated, bricked if removed. Will be as common as odometers and will do tolling.

I just ran across the article.. I didn't look close at the dates. Absolutely the first time I had heard about these. To be honest, I think the logistics of making a tag like this work would be prohibitive. It would make more sense to have the manufacturer build a plate directly onto the vehicle than add something like this. That would create a regulatory nightmare too.

They'd have to drag me kicking and screaming. Just another pita thing that will drain the battery and cause potential issues. Funny, remeber the lights around the plates in the late 80/ earlu 90's? They said that was a distraction and gave tickets. How will this not be a distraction?

"Will do tolling" Oh great. More money to drive on roads already paid for many times over by fuel and other taxes. As EZPASS and other electronic tolling ventures have increased in popularity, tolls have skyrocketed. No thanks to any of it. The government and politically connected companies that get these types of contracts are only after more revenue and collecting data.

Not only NO but HELL NO!

On another note, didn't Dean Martin drive a car (Thunderbird) in one of his movies that had one of those scrolling signs in the tail lights?

Assuming this comes to fruition, it's hacked in ten minutes and you better believe people are abusing toll roads with their new, false license plate numbers.

The concept certainly has merit, but the current execution is no bueno.

Perhaps it will evolve into something useful.

No more so than now, which is minuscule.

I think, if running red lights is a habit for you, tickets might be the least of your worries, aye?

There is a bit of a difference between running a light, and rqcing to catch a light while scanning the adjacent roads for traffic. The cameras take your picture and send the bill either way.
