Is it still illegal to pump your own in Joysey?
Yeppers, New Jersey the last holdout.
Technically it's illegal for the station to allow the customer to dispense their own gasoline.
Fuel Attendant - Ready Training Online
In New Jersey it's illegal. For anyone other than a train fuel attendant to Pump Fuel.
This modules outlines the responsibilities of a fuel attendant, and the importance of speedy, safe and friendly service.

I always go 6 more clicks. I don't want to have to stop for gas 68 seconds sooner on a long drive. That is valuable time on the road so need every foot per tank I can get. Just joshing (not slooshing) folks. First click unless as @kevink says I know it should take 8 to 10 gallons and clicks off after 2. Years ago I was at a pump that obviously had a defective nozzle because it clicked off every 5 seconds or so. I gave up, closed the transaction and went to another pump which worked fine.
been there with the shutting off over and over at my local BJ's. lol Did the same. Always do one extra click as long as I feel that it is full.

I will never understand the people that will click the pump ten freaking times for a spit of gas.
Old systems you could top off. It’s a habit I would guess started during the 70’s energy crisis?

When TFL did their MPG test on the Maverick Hybrid, they did an additional click. Ford saw the video and commented about the break-in period. Didn't say anything about the fueling process.

Ok, I'll admit to a lingering habit of old to attempt to reach an even dollar amount but that has physically gotten harder to do in recent years as the pumps seem more sensitive.

Habits die hard.

I'll also say I never knew about this info so it will be on my mind during the next fill up.

I've always clicked once or twice, no idea why but never had an issue with any of my cars 🤷‍♂️ they also say not to coast to a stop because it's wear and tear on your transmission but also do that and no issues there either. I guess time will tell if my "bad" habits are truly bad

What I remember was that former Governor Christine Todd Whitman put the self-pump ban in effect for two major reasons.
1. she included a “removal” of state tax because…
2. All stations had to hire income tax paying employees.
sounded like a good idea, and pumped NJ gas was much cheaper than surrounding states (I lived in PA by the border). Im guessing that gas tax break didn’t last for long.

I've used the "one extra click" method for the last 50 years with no problems whatsoever. I also anticipate stops and "coast" into a stop light or sign with the only issue being my brake pads last longer. I have also learned to wait for the driver on my left at a red light to pull out first in case some idiot runs a red light ;)

Haha yes! Brake pads do last longer this way. And I do the same at a red light that changes to green. I may not be the brightest out there but I ain't no Guinea pig 😄

i know how much it takes to fill mine up, I like to challenge myself to see if I can release it on a dollar amount and then get other pumpers to come look at my achievement.
